The Giants retain Bonds' rights until two weeks after the end of the World Series. But one of his most loyal enablers — owner Peter Magowan — isn't sure bringing Bonds back is such a good idea.

"I think we need to go in a new direction," Magowan said. "We have for a long time had a strategy that has worked well until the last two years, when it hasn't worked so well. The strategy has been one of having a great player — maybe the greatest player in the game — at the centerpiece and filling in with veteran players.

"For a long time that worked well. It caught up with us the past couple of years. Now we do need to get younger and healthier."

That's interesting. If Bonds were to leave the Giants, where would he go? What would be the cost of employing him? Should the Cubs have interest?

I would be shocked if any NL team even approaches his agent.

So, what team in the AL will want him and pay him what it would take to get him?

The Yankees?

The Red Sox don't have an opening at DH. Maybe the Angels?

I think the baseball team that employs him will be able to name their price rather than the other way around. He's a broken down player who is only continuing for his own personal goals.

Anaheim seems like a decent fit. Oakland would to if it weren't for Thomas.

I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas priced himself out of Oakland this season.

I think it depends on Schmidt. They aren't bringing Alou back. They will make a token offer to Schmidt and if he gives them a discount, they'll probably bring back him and Bonds for a year, then trade Schmidt after 2007. But Schmidt will leave, combined with Alou leaving....Bonds going makes for a perfect rebuilding opportunity.

I recall reading somewhere that Beane said Thomas was worth re-signing, even though he'd be more expensive...

Plus its not like Bonds is going to be willing to sign for league minimum.

The weird Giants rumor I've been hearing is that they'll go after Zito, which makes NO sense to me if they're going to lose Bonds and Schmidt.

I have no idea what the giants should do, but I know it shouldnt be that. But thats what happens when you build a team full of AARP members. At somepoint you have to blow it up and completely rebuild.

Whoa whoa whoa...

If Barry Bonds (ESPN's #1 favorite player) goes to the New York Yankees (ESPN's #1 favorite team) how much time will they devote to Bonds/NYY in each program?

Haha...can T.O. play baseball? And if so does he have any interest in joining the Yankees to create ESPN's Wet Dream Team?? They'd probably turn that into it's own seperate channel...haha.

Baseball Tonight would become Yankees Tonight.

Haha, if Bonds goes to the Yankees, their new :20 minute programming lineup should be

:00 Baseball tonight

:20 Yankees tonight

:40 Outside the Lines

Basically:

Baseball Tonight: 30 seconds on some of the league, 5 minutes on Dodgers, 5 minutes on Mets, 9:30 on RedSox. Royals, Tampa Bay, and Oakland no longer exist except when playing said teams.

20 minutes on Yankees

20 minutes on Bonds.

That's what pretty much everyone thought about Piazza too though. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that an NL team wanting to make a splash puts in an offer.

But realistically, Bonds is going to be

A) Very Expensive

B) pretty old

C) big question mark on his health

= perfect Yankee

You forgot

D) Hated by the fans of the team he plays for. Would you want to be the GM who tells your fan base they have to root for a guy they already hate? Not to mention that the team who signed him would be hated for giving him the opportunity to pass Aaron. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Giants or nothing for Bonds.

Are you kidding me? Bonds will be a Giant next season. You don't just let someone walk who is getting ready to break one of professional sports prestigious records. I think he signs a 2 year, incentive laden deal with the Giants. The amount of money he'll bring to San Francisco next year alone, will make up for any money spent on Bonds.

To think he'll be with any other ballclub next season is CRAZY!!!!!
