What is wrong with Prior again that he's not going to be ready by ST?

My guess is that he'll get struck by lightning in the offseason.

my money is on bird flu or mad cow.

Will Carroll reported that Prior has the same shoulder injury Woody had going into this season (via Cubs sources).

I don't know about that source, but Carroll has a great track record as far as Prior is concerned. If it's true, we shouldn't count on Prior at all. Trading him is stupid as his value is rock bottom, but we should fill out the rotation w/o taking him into account.

MacPhail said earlier today that the Cubs should take health into account from now on (DUH!!!) when making player acquisitions. There's hope.

Could [ARod] be reunited with Lou Piniella at Wrigley Field? . . . An intriguing package would be Piniella with a two- or three-year contract and a manager-in-training (Japanese import Trey Hillman, for example) as his bench coach and future replacement.

I'm surprised that nobody commented on this part. I guess I'll be the first.

Just say no to Lou Piniella. Two or three years in Chicago? I hope not.

I'm counting on him to be on the DL for 2007 and if he's healthy it's a bonus.

Agreed. And if his ERA is under 4.00 we should praise the Baseball G-ds.

We could do a lot worse than Lou and A-Rod . . . like just Lou, for example :)

I heard Bruce Levine just laugh at the Trey Hillman thing. He said management of the Cubs never heard of this guy...

There are supposedly 20+ teams that have shown interest in Daisuke, so stating the Cubs are one of them isn't that big a deal. I still think he'll be a Yank or a Mariner.

You think the M's will pony up the money for Daisuke and Schmidt?

I'm highly skeptical that the posting fee for Matsuzaka will be as high as 20 mil.

I think the posting fee will be high, but I have no idea why people think he could negotiate a $10M/year contract after that. He'll be in a position of zero negotiating leverage.

Take it for what it's worth but I have a friend of mine that knows Prior's cousin really well. She told my friend that if Dusty is gone next year Prior will be healthy. She told him that while Prior was feeling discomfort in his shoulder he could have pitched through it. According to her, Prior and his father made the decision that he wasn't going to be abused by Dusty any longer. I absolutely got this info 3rd hand but my friend is a huge cub fan and I believe him.

Honestly, no. But given all the things in their favor in terms of the Japanese players signing with them (and the fact that Schmidt isn't a slam dunk Mariner signing), I think they have to be in the top 2 or 3 (add Baltimore, I guess).

And i'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but this is from an NY paper...

"Yes, the Chicago Cubs have Terry Francona on their list of managerial candidates, and it is likely the Cubs will ask (or already have) for permission to interview Francona when the presumed firing of Dusty Baker is announced... "

FYI, from Bruce's article this morning.

Bruce Miles / The Daily Herald[/url]"] Hendry’s search for a new manager will begin immediately. Even though there are divergent opinions about Joe Girardi in the organization, the Cubs will seriously consider their former catcher, who is expected to be fired by the Florida Marlins.

The Cubs also may consider Atlanta Braves third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez, whom they interviewed in 2002 when they hired Baker. Gonzalez appears to be the front-runner in Florida if Girardi is fired.

Cubs insiders claimed to know nothing about a report out of Boston that said the Cubs will or even have asked the Red Sox for permission to talk with Terry Francona, who managed the Red Sox to the 2004 World Series title.

Former big-league manager Lou Piniella also figures to get strong consideration from Hendry.

That wasn't really a fair question on my part either. I was trying to point out that many people are viewing Daisuke and Schmidt as non-Cubs because of rumors of them going to Seattle, but it's highly unlikely both end up there.

No disrespect intended to anyone but I find this extremely implausible, on multiple levels.

Sweet, I'm one level closer to Prior via another cousin of his. Went to high school with the guy.

I haven't called him to get his take, but maybe I should

None taken. But it's true.
