Yes, the Chicago Cubs have Terry Francona on their list of managerial candidates, and it is likely the Cubs will ask (or already have) for permission to interview Francona when the presumed firing of Dusty Baker is announced.

 

It is also likely that the Red Sox will turn down the Cubs, though it should be noted that the Cubs would likely have to give the Sox some form of compensation if Francona ever were to end up there.

 

After all, the Seattle Mariners ended up getting Randy Winn for allowing Lou Piniella to go to Tampa Bay.

This general consensus that ex-Cub Joe Girardi is the heir apparent to Dusty Baker in Chicago is both unfounded and unlikely. To the best of anyone's knowledge, Girardi has no relationship with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and, according to Cubs insiders, Girardi's inability to get along with Marlins GM Larry Beinfest has not been lost on Hendry. Or most other GMs, for that matter.

Should get interesting pretty soon. I doubt Dusty is back, I also don't think he wants to be back. You will probably see a statement indicating both the Cubs and Dusty will pursue other options. His contract is up, he won't technically be fired.

 

Let's not just get carried away and think this solves all the Cubs problems if it happens. It might be a step in the right direction, but there is a lot of other moves that need to be made.

I am amazed at how many people seem to think on this board that Dusty will be re-signed. There is zero chance of that happening especially now that MacPhail has resigned. The Cubs are trying to show fans that losing won't be tolerated and bringing back Dusty would certainly be a reversal of changing leadership at the top.
