Possibility? Brenly manager, Stone in the booth, Baker ESPN?

Posted
i could do without stone in the booth, thank you. except for the nostalgia, i can't see one reason to hire him. i guess his pitching insights are pretty decent, but other than that, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

i'd prefer brenly to stay, he actually is much more in tune with the modern game than steve "billy beane got lucky" stone.

right... he has proposed some bizzare trades recently but as far as his overall baseball knowlege goes, there are few if any around as good as he is. i would love to see him back in the booth.

I genuinely miss Steve Stone's dry sense of humor. I could see him giving Len a lot of grief which would liven up the broadcaster.

I pretty much hate all color commentators that aren't Steve Stone. Granted Steve Stone is old school but that might balance really well with Len's point of view.

I really hope Stone does end up being a GM one day (just not the Cubs' GM.) If he made all the moves he says would be great moves, his team would be a disaster.

I liked Stone's broadcasting for awhile, but I did grow tired of it. Stone's inflated view of himself often gets in the way of his analysis.

I like the Kasper-Brenly combination. Kasper is a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of broadcasters.

I'd like to see ESPN try to fit Stone and Morgan in the booth together. I'm not sure those two egos would even fit in the same venue, much less the same booth.

Seconded.

Dusty would be the bestest analyst ever. It's too bad he'll get offers to manage again.

"Dusty what did you think about that pitch!"

"What? Uh, oh I didn't see it from where I'm sitting."

baker and kruk on espn....oh man....that would be amazing.

Throw Steve Phillips on there for good measure. Or if we can get Dibble to come back... :D

Oh god. I don't think I would watch baseball tonight ever again if Baker joined them.

Really? I'd have have it on Tivo series record!

Since somebody mentioned Rob Dibble, let me just say he and Kevin Kennedy are terrible on XM Radio. Three hours of name-dropping, self-aggrandizing, and faulty logic in arguing that "stats don't matter". I'd rather listen to the new Oprah channel than these two clowns.

They could have hotstove talk with Joe Morgan and Dusty Baker:

Karl Ravech: Where do you two think Jason Schmidt is going to end up next year?

Joe Morgan: I guess we'll have to wait and see where he goes, then I'll make a decision.

Dusty Baker: Well, the way I see it, it's like the Giants are fishing and they're trying to reel him in but they can't quite do it and their line broke and they're all "DAG NAB IT" and he's wriggling free but he has a hook in his mouth now so he wants revenge so I predict he goes somewheres to the NL West.

Posted

Ravech: Who, in your opinion, is the greatest second baseman of all time?

Dusty: I'm gonna have to go with Felix Millan. He played second with Hank Aaron in 1968, which by extension makes him amazing.

Morgan: Who was second baseman on my 1970s Reds teams? Oh, yeah, that was me. I'm going to go with myself. If not me, then anyone not named Ryne Sandberg.

Ken Tremendous: You've gotta be kidding me, Dusty. Millan's career line: 279/322/343. And Joe, you're actually not far off on picking yourself even though your rationale is an absolute *bleeping* joke.

Posted

Ravech: Alright then, now that we're 0 for 2, we need a hit. Who was the winner in the Scott Kazmir -> Victor Zambrano trade between Tampa Bay and the New York Mets

Morgan: The 1976 Reds

Baker: The Mets, because it's like they're fishermen and they reeled a Devil Ray

I guess from an unintentional comedy standpoint it could be worth watching.

as for stone and trade talk he was all over the Maddux for Izturis thing he claimed it would happen two weeks before it did.

Good for him. That doesn't make the trade better, or make him any more qualified to be anything but a color analyst.

They are unlistenable - I haven't listened to them in months. Although this spring I did hear Dibble say "Wrigley Stadium". Dibbles problem is that he thinks he's really bright but he's ..................well he's not bright.

It'd be like my ideal football announcing crew:

Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Pat Summerall

Crack Aikman and Young over the head with a hammer, give Summerall a handle of Jack, sit back, and watch the magic unfold. :D

From today's tribune:

Brenly's contract to provide analysis on Cubs telecasts runs through 2008, and although he's not actively seeking a manager's job, he has had a bird's-eye view of the Cubs' problems.

Coincidentally, former Cubs broadcaster Steve Stone was seen dining recently with John McDonough, the Cubs senior vice president of marketing and broadcasting. Sources insist it was just a social meeting between old friends, but if Brenly gets a managerial job, the door may be open for Stone's return to the Cubs' TV booth.

If Baker doesn't get a managerial job, he figures to draw interest from ESPN as a baseball analyst.

How must-see would Baker be as an ESPN analyst? Seriously.

Hmmm...

A revisit necessary? Discuss...

Rob Dibble = Jeff Gordon. :D

Stone is great. KNOWS his stuff, doesn't dominate the conversation. HE actually talks baseball, balls and strikes and strategy. And when someone, player or manager, scr*ws up, he points it out professionally, rather than ignoring it or going postal.

Bring back stone in the booth (and give me Girardi in dugout)

I give it a 80% chance that is going to happen.
