Dusty better have somebody up in the pen in case Hill falls apart this inning. He had 98 pitches through the 5th inning. No need to run up his pitch count in a 7 run game.

Gotta qualify for a quality start, dude.

It really steams me that Hill is still in the game.

If Dusty is worried about exhausting his bullpen (and if he is he has his priorities mixed up and his facts need checking), then bring up some minor leaguers.

Hill tends to lose his mechanics after 90-100 pitches, and there's no point in risking injury when the team is leading by 7 and out of the playoff hunt.

Anyone remember the Cub manager (or was it pitching coach?) who actually admitted to losing track of the pitch count after they let a young pitcher (Rueben Quevedo I think) throw over 130 pitches?

Am I imagining this?

I'm fine with letting him finish this batter.

EDIT: Although I wouldn't have been if I'd known it would be a 10 pitch AB.

if the homeplate ump didn't have such a tight zone and the cubs could field a ground ball, hill would have made it to the 8th inning.

damn it, i needed a QS for my fantasty team!

yeah, if you've already let him go to 110 and you've got 2 outs, it'd be silly to yank him in the middle of an at-bat.

Exactly..he was at 109 at the beginning of that at-bat. I believe the entire time that they were planning to bring him out after that at-bat if it be a hit or not, they just didn't expect that at-bat to go 11 pitches.

Well even if it weren't in the middle of an AB. Who'd expect it would be 10 pitches?

I'd be fine with a 115. If I'd have known it would get to 120, I wouldn't have left him in.

of course the next guy makes an out on the first pitch.

::Massive frustration::

Argh. Woulda been nice if Hill had ended the inning without any damage there.

Nice outing by Hill, just to many pitches.

Would be nice if Dusty would have the sense to use this (8-2 score) to give guys like Buck Coats, Scott Moore and Geo Soto some time in the field.

still a very solid outing, esp given the small strike zone tonight

Yup, you are right. After doing a search, it indeed was a 21 year old Rueben Quevedo who was allowed to throw 135 pitches. Oscar Acosta lost track of the pitch count and Don Baylor confessed that it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

I can imagine the field day this board would be having if Dusty and Rothschild did something similar.
