cubs Activate marmol,

RECALL moore FROM IOWA

Monday, September 4, 2006

The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol from the 15-day disabled list. In addition, Chicago has recalled infielder Scott Moore from Triple-A Iowa.

Marmol, 23, landed on the disabled list on August 21 (retroactive to August 19) with right shoulder fatigue. He made two rehabilitation appearances with Iowa, September 1-3, tossing a total of 3.0 innings out of the bullpen.

Marmol has gone 5-6 with a 5.65 (45 ER/71.2 IP) in 15 games (13 starts) this season, his rookie campaign. He made his Major League debut June 4 at St. Louis with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Marmol earned his first career victory in his first Major League start, June 11 at Cincinnati.

Moore, 22, will be looking to make his Major League debut in his fifth professional season. Originally selected by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft (eighth overall), Moore was acquired by Chicago on February 9, 2005, in the trade which sent Kyle Farnsworth to Detroit.

This season, Moore batted .276 with 28 doubles, 22 home runs and 75 RBI in 132 games with Double-A West Tenn. The left-handed hitter reached base in 29 consecutive games from July 28-August 27, and was named to the Southern League Mid-Season All-Star Team, as well as the Post-Season All-Star squad.

Most recently, Moore – who will wear uniform number 15 – went 1-for-4 with a double and run yesterday with Iowa at Omaha.

I don't know anything about Moore other than that most people here weren't that excited to get him. What's the deal with him? Is he projected to be an everyday player in the majors, or a bench player?

Anyone think Hendry wants to see what he has before any potential negotiations with ARam come up?

I hope this isn't the case...no matter how well Moore does, he's not ready to take over the role of a starter next year.

Moore followed in the footsteps of Adam Greenburg and got hit by a pitch in his first major league at bat. At least he was able to continue.

putting the pressure on aramis or trying to make the farnsworth trade look good?

I think the Farnsworth trade has been considered good for quite a while now.

How so? Novoa has been just shy of brutally awful, and Moore hasn't exactly been a "can't-miss".

Guys like Farnsworth cab be replaced. He's making 5.5 million this year, I don't think he is worth that.

Moore has some potential, we shall see.

I just don't think Farnsworthhas been any great loss since his departure.

Hopefully Moore will make the most of his opportunities which will consist of 5 PH appearances and 1 start the last day of the season.

Note to Scott Moore: Dusty Baker had 4 hits in his first AB when he made his debut.

He'll be an everyday player, but probably won't come anywhere close to Aramis-production.

unless moore pans out, it was nothing better than a wash. novoa has been horrible.

Novoa has given nearly the same production that Farns had given the Cubs. Not to mention at a fraction of the cost. Bash Hendry all you want but the Farnsworth trade is a poor example of a poor Hendry move. Het got 2 viable major leaguers for a headcase middle reliever.

Novoa hasn't even come close to what Farnsworth has done.

Yeah his leg grabbing diving tackle isn't nearly as good as farnsworth.

so you're calling moore a viable major leaguer now?

and novoa has not come anywhere close to giving the cubs the same production farnsworth did from 2001-2004, which even includes a terrible year from farnsworth.

and i never said it was a bad trade...like i said, it's a wash. farnsworth got way more money than the cubs would have given him, so he wouldn't be a cub now anyway. but novoa's production could be matched by any number of 100's of other guys.

4 hits in his first AB? What does that mean? :?

It's a joke. I think it's in reference to Dusty's repeated statements about when he came up when discussing rookies.

I believe we are downplaying Novoa's contributions. I do believe that he is a contributor and more effective then others in his role. And yes Moore is a "viable" major leaguer. In other words a player likely to play in the major league. Lo and behold he has. The guy is a former 1st rounder and is only 22. I would say that the Farns trade is edge Cubs considering that the Tigers got nothing for him 4 months later.
