New Jersey Star Ledger[/url]"] That the Phillies' shocking change of direction in their belated effort to win the NL wild-card spot hasn't stopped at the puzzling Jamie Moyer trade. In the past week, in an effort to boost their offense, the Phils have talked to the Cubs about Juan Pierre, the Royals about Reggie Sanders and the Orioles about Jeff Conine. Hey, you know who might be real good? Bobby Abreu. Morons.

I hope we told them he was available for 2 pretty good prospects, minimum. Which is what we should get if he walks from arbitration.

Guessing at how overvalued he is to our front office though, we probably told them to send us Howard, Rowand, and Michael Bourn (cuz Jim liked his movies and his speed doesn't slump).

The Cubs should jump at trading Pierre if the Phillies are offering three young pitchers,, including one with significant upside.

the cubs need offense imo. they have plenty of good young pitching already.

Exactly why they should trade Pierre.

Since this year is shot, how about Rowand and a significant prospect?

If trading away Pierre eliminates (or even reduces) the chances of Hendry wasting significant money on him for the next few years, I don't care what we get back.

I don't trading Pierre through the waiver wire will get the return desired thus far in the thread.

I don't either. There's no way we'd get what we're likely to get from declining arbitration through a trade, waiver-wire or not. And if we're stuck with him for 1 more year, that's ok too. Pie shouldn't be rushed.

Yes. Please trade pierre now. I'm sick of watching other teams run on our outfield. We need a center fielder with an arm and an obp and a slg %. Also I don't want hendry to be tempted to blow a bunch of money on him. So if we get something decent, a prospect who already has good numbers, not one of those high cieling low performance guys, I say do it. Save money and throw Pie in center and with improve defense and money to spend on zito or schmidt and we'll be in a much better positon for next year.

In order for the trade to go down, the Cubs would have to receive prospects not on the Phillies' 40 man roster or the Phillies have to pass their own guys through waivers.

I have trouble seeing the latter scenario happening.

The Phillies' farm system sucks, by the way. Most of their top positional prospects have slumped badly this season.

Of course this is all assuming that Pierre made it through to the Phils. I'd have to think theres a couple teams that would have chosen him before the Phils.

Does it look like Pierre will be a Class A free agent? I know they use "traditional" stats like BA and PAs and that will keep him at least in the top 50%, but boy has he sucked the past two seasons.

I think he'll be a type A. But that's just a random guess. I actually wouldn't trade Pierre, unless I got prospects close to the majors. The draft picks would be more valuable at this stage than any 2 prospects from the Phillies that are in the low minors.

Agreed.

Too bad Hendry will re-sign him instead. :(

I'd trade him to the Phillies for Howard and Hamels. :D

Cubs have no need for Howard (and Ryan can't play anywhere else but 1st) with Lee on the team, so I would say CHASE UTLEY or bust....

With that said...

People automatically assumes that Pierre who could be classed as a Type A Free Agent, would be offered arb. But what happens if Hendry doesn't offer arb to Pierre, ie like Nomar, and he leaves without getting any draft picks in return? Or better yet, what happens if Hendry does offer ARB, and so a team goes Boston/Clement on us? Meaning the Cubs would have to settle for a 2nd/3rd/4th rd pick at best for Pierre?

Nomar was likely to get more in arbitration than in free agency, and so would be much more likely to accept arbitration. Pierre is very unlikely to accept arbitration, as he has a great chance of getting a multiyear deal from somebody. If he declines arbitration, and we only get a 3rd or 4th round pick, it still might be worth more than the Phillies would give up for 1 month of Pierre.

I wasn't sure if Howard would be able to move to the outfield or not; that was my thinking. I'd still happily take Utley, though, or even Rollins.

Of course, there's a zero percent chance of the Phillies actually trading any of those players for Pierre.

The reason that happened with Clement is because he was a type B. Assuming Pierre is a type A, at the very least we would get a supplemental pick plus whatever lower round pick.

Any chance we could get the occasionally-maligned Burrell for Pierre? Move Jones to center, Burrell in right, and our OF is significantly improved.

MLB.com ...

The Phillies are still looking for outfield help and would like to pry Juan Pierre away from the Chicago Cubs. Pierre could step in for Aaron Rowand, who is out for the rest of the regular season after breaking his left ankle.
