Portland and Seattle are the only MLS markets where club trumps country across the board. Less so in Seattle. A lot less so. Maybe because of Deuce, Evans and Yedlin. Maybe because Seattle has less of an insular, inferiority complex about their soccer team and their fandom. Portland has a lot of hipster bro fans who are PT! FC! fans more than they are US fans, MLS fans or even soccer fans. I'm way less impressed with them than they are with themselves. The Henry thing was handled well by Thierry and his people. He's been basically hinting that he's retiring and there's been a groundswell of people outside of NY/NJ going out of their way to deservedly celebrate him and it kind of peaked in that game.

Not really true. Talk about gross generalizations and mischaracterizations. When I moved to PDX, I didn't have an MLS team -- being from Chicago, but having lived in Atlanta and DC for long periods of time -- the Fire didn't make sense. DC are annoying and RFK is a terrible venue (then there's the whole competing supporters groups there which is lame), so no to them. When I moved here, I adopted the Timbers, but it took a while. There is a very loyal, large core of Timbers fans there, and with only the Blazers and Timbers for sports teams in a major metropolitan area, that's where they focus their attention. They know their soccer, and are passionate. They definitely hate Seattle like a little brother, but whatever. They also hate Vancouver, too. The Timbers are a really big deal in Portland.

You see the PDX equivalent of meatballs (hipster bro fans) and you are judging the entire fanbase on an invented standard, and it's ridiculous. The Timbers season ticket wait list is like years long (I'm on it), and PDX are drawing record crowds for Thorns games. The town likes soccer.

The same Timbers Army guys booing Dempsey at the all-star game were cheering him at the Timbers Army viewing location for the World Cup -- which they set up at their expense. They do hate Garber for all kids of various things, but whatever, again. I think the rivalry is good for MLS, and for the teams.

You love Dempsey for what he represents for the USMNT and for Americans abroad -- fair enough, so do I. They love him in a US shirt and hate him in a Seattle shirt. And that's about how it should be.

Yedlin to Spurs is done. $3,500,000.

Nervous. Spurs just bargain shops. They don't necessarily buy with a plan other than to get value and see what sticks.

BUT. Pochettino developed some hellacious wing backs/play at Southhampton.

I really, really, really want him to succeed. Such an exciting, dynamic player.

Dempsey wasn't wearing a Seattle shirt at the ASG.

They can hate him when he's wearing a Seattle shirt, just don't boo him. It's over the top, unnecessary and stupid. Ditto for Donovan. Country trumps club every day of the week.

... and happens every weekend all over Europe whenever a local rivalry game is sheduled.

To most European soccer fans, club does in fact trump country. I'm not saying that's how it should be, merely observing reality.

That's crazy.

So the EPL season is about to start. Where can I go to find "soccer sabermetrics" and advanced stats? What do the soccer stat guys say I should be watching for during a match?

Opta and Stats Bomb. Advanced analytics are still in their infancy in soccer.

Looks like same [expletive] different season for Man Utd, but they did show glimpses of great attacking play in the first half, but that defence needs improving drastically if the season is to be any good.

Good.

Cameron has not filed a formal transfer request, but Stoke City appears ready to offload the American defender. The list of clubs interested in Cameron is a sizable one, with teams from Germany to Italy and within the English Premier League in the mix in the U.S. national team defender.

Cameron's desire to leave Stoke City after two seasons stems from wanting to play either as a central defender or defensive midfielder rather than right back, where he has spent the past two seasons with the Potters.

Sources have also told Goal USA that a Serie A team that finished in the top eight last season is among the clubs in the mix for Cameron.

i watched arsenal, liverpool, and chelsea this weekend. chelsea scored that amazing goal and was the most fun in general, although it it does seem like the team they were playing was real trash.
