Yes, it was the actual team not a soccer club or anything.

well then no offense, but perhaps you can understand why everyone is so incredulous. i didn't play soccer through high school, but i went to some games. it's almost inconceivable to me that someone could play soccer for 12 years, including at the high school level, and have no idea that a red card means you play shorthanded. nor have i ever heard of a level as advanced as high school where a red card just you have to be subbed out.

I completely understand everyone thinking I'm dumb, I would probably think the same thing.

Just try and look at it from my side and I don't think it's that hard to see why I didn't know about it.

I mainly played recreation and yes in recreation you simply sub the person out with a replacement, I played competitive for 3-4 years and honestly I can't remember a red card being given out and I just simply do not remember coaches ever going into it in detail because no one ever got one.

I'm sorry I offended people with my idiocy but I was simply a FIFA newb coming in to discuss the Women's game and got hammered for it.

He just wasn't mentally prepared to learn about red cards.

Why are you being a dick I wasn't bashing you for anything. I clearly dont have the soccer experience or knowledge that you have. Do you make fun of a toddler for not knowing how to speak? It's not like I came in here saying I was all knowing and watched FIFA all the time, I don't, which is quite obvious.

I never played competitive soccer, I don't watch competitive soccer and I don't even really like soccer (I poke my head in here occasionally so I can keep up to date with stuff I would be really remiss for not knowing). Just about all I know of soccer is what I am exposed to between highlights of other sports on ESPN. I have known what a red card is for a long, long time.

I keep thinking everyone in this thread is being trolled right now. He's serious, right?

My god yes, I didn't come into this thread to share my wealth of soccer knowledge, which I apparently have none. Maybe I had [expletive] coaches, maybe I was sick the day they talked about red cards, or maybe I just didn't give a crap and was off in my own world not listening.

You were on a 4 day holiday of some sort.

I knew what a red card was I've just never played in a game or league where you play a man down. This is actually the first time I've ever poked my head in here, so you have that up on me, and boy do I regret doing it.

Wow you must have been pretty good, I loved playing it but once I got a job in high school I quit the team since a 120 dollar paycheck was pretty nice when you are living on 20 dollars a month.

MFer Windermere

Nice, I was always a midfielder since I was also a runner and played Leftoutside MF in high school. I always made the joke that I was playing Left-out and had to explain that it was an actual position.

Awesome

But you're all being trolled I'm sure

a friend of mine still plays soccer in a rec league, and red card in that rec league means the same as a red card in fifa. maybe little kid rec leagues are different? but i can't recall many cards being given out at that age anyway. high school was another story though.

Have any of you ragging on me ever played soccer competitively? You may think I'm an idiot because you watch FIFA and knew that rule, but from my view I have played soccer for near 12 years and that was never a rule for me so why should I think it was a rule for FIFA? Sorry I didn't play in college or in Europe so I don't know the rules.

Since you're going to play that game: I played competitive soccer for 18 years (granted, at the lowest level of the Belgian FA's official league) and the red card rule hasn't changed since I started playing in 1972. Local FA's do tinker with the rules sometimes in specific circumstances (usually youth or reserve competitions or tournaments) - I remember an experiment with mandatory substitution after a yellow card - but big rule changes at the professional level are extremely rare. The one I remember most vividly was when a goalkeeper was no longer allowed to handle a ball that was played back to him (except when it was headed back) - as a defender, that one took some time to adjust to.

The standard test to find out is to ask him to explain the offside rule.

Does "handle" mean touch with hands only in this case?

Part of sections 15 of FIFA's laws of the game:

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following ...offences:

...

- touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team-mate

- touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a throw-in taken by a team-mate

Do you tell them who FIFA wants to win the game first? Otherwise it's really hard to know how that will be called. Or do you mean the actual rule?

It was a reference to a beer commercial on TV (the gender of a drag queen at the bar is questioned by a group of men in the bar; so one of them goes up to him/her and asks to explain the offside rule. After getting a perfect explanation, he goes back to his friends and simply says: "it's a man")

The USA vs Brazil Women's WC match on Sunday tripled the ratings of the Giants/Mets game of the week later in the day.

I guess everyone here noticed Mexico were eliminated from the Copa America after losing all three games in the first round.

They did take their u23 team, so it's not much of a surprise.
