Frankly, I'm shocked at how few stories about how much sheer "Americanness" and "American Spirit" Japan showed in never giving up, fighting to the death and achieving their manifest destiny.

Seriously, kiss my ass ESPN, stop propagating nonsense stories like this whenever a US soccer team wins. I know as an American sports media outlet that can't resist the easiest story line ever, you love it when we are the perceived under dogs, but just shut up. Soccer style as metaphor for national identity is an old, worn out cliche and you can't call it manifest destiny when they win and ignore it when they lose.

I dunno, Franklin Foer did a pretty good job of convincing me there's at least a little truth to it.

What are you guys' opinions on golden goal vs. silver goal? Yesterday's games notwithstanding, I think golden goal scenarios would create for a much more exciting extra time period.

I'm a traditionalist - I like it the way it is.

TBH, I prefer the old FA cup way: keep playing replay games until you get a result. That would never work in international tournaments though.

Isn't golden goal the traditional way? I thought silver goal was introduced within the last 20-30 years.

That I don't know, we had golden goal for what 2-3 years in the early 2000's?

I like the silver goal. The desperation of the other team having to equalize after getting scored on in extra time is just too fun to watch.

Hey Michael Bradley, stop being a [expletive].

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/andrea_canales/07/14/mbradley.incident/index.html?sct=sc_wr_a2

According to a witness who spoke on the record, but declined attribution, midfielder Michael Bradley was upset that Fox Soccer pundit and former U.S. national team player Eric Wynalda had suggested other players on the U.S. roster as more deserving of playing time -- especially given Bradley's lack of game time with Aston Villa. Specifically, it was Wynalda's quotes in an ESPN.com article about how midfielders Maurice Edu and Jermaine Jones had "earned" consideration for the national team with their club play that bothered Michael Bradley.

While Wynalda was at the U.S. team's hotel to film player interviews before the Gold Cup final, Michael Bradley came at him angrily, poking a finger into his chest and yelling, while accusing Wynalda of saying he should not be on the national team.

Wynalda, according to the source, denied ever saying Michael Bradley didn't deserve to be on the national squad, but acknowledged he had said there were players who played Bradley's position who deserved more time on the field.

Bradley persisted in taking issue with the statements, accusing Wynalda and media in general of always stirring the pot with critical comments about the U.S. team. Wynalda, no shrinking violet himself, fired back at the player.

"Grow the [expletive] up," Wynalda reportedly said. "You have a problem with me complimenting players who play your position."

-Canales is a hack

-Mikey needs to chill out

-Word on the street is that there's a growing divide in the locker room.

Those were both were experiments from the late 90's, early 00's.

The traditional way is 2x15mins extra time, then a penalty shoot-out.

It really didn't take much psychic ability to see this coming. It certainly doesn't seem like a Donovan-Dempsey thing after Clint's goal celebration when Landon was benched and brought on late. The whole not being able to talk [expletive] in front of the coach's kid makes sense. Also, some of the older guys have to be losing their voices as more and more younger guys come in.

Either way, I like the old NASL shootouts more than PK's. Give's the keeper more of a chance, it's more exciting and takes more skill.

i like that a lot more too, but i'd like for the line they start from to be a little closer or for them to have a couple of extra seconds.

I can't watch but assuming its the 25 yards back, 5 seconds to dribble and shoot? We did those in a couple of tournaments in the mid 90's. I would be ok with moving to that after extra time instead of PK's. No controversy on the keeper moving off the line early too.

Womens World Cup Championship Game was the most watched soccer game ever on ESPN. It drew a 7.4 fast national rating. The previous high was a 4.0 for last years US-Algeria mens match.

With an average viewership of 13.5 million people, it was the 6th most watched soccer game ever in the US.

Something like 16 million for the US-England game (which was at like 5 in the morning) but maybe that was ABC. I don't recall.

The Vancouver Canucks are one of the most historic NHL franchises? With their zero Stanley Cups? And mere forty year (NHL) existence? He must be talking about riots.

plus he's comparing an event that happens every four years, and an event with an american team playing, with a stanley cup final game (played every year) that involved a team from new england and a team from western canada. wouldn't it make more sense to compare it to the ratings of the USA-canada gold medal hockey game? wait that wouldn't have worked out too well for da bum, because more than twice as many people watched that one.

look at what is more talked about around the water cooler.

A lot of the blame falls media folks like me who rarely report on it.

This summer Twitter went crazy towards the end of the U.S. loss to Japan in penalty kicks on Sunday.

TRUTH: Levin Black has never used a comma in his life.

he uses the phrase "talked about" repeatedly in his articles. i'm not a professional journalist, but shouldn't that phrase pretty much never be used in print? there are words like "discussed" that say the same thing without it sounding like you're just chatting with some guy on the street.
