he uses the phrase "talked about" repeatedly in his articles. i'm not a professional journalist, but shouldn't that phrase pretty much never be used in print? there are words like "discussed" that say the same thing without it sounding like you're just chatting with some guy on the street.

I refuse to believe he passed junior high English.

This summer Twitter went crazy towards the end of the U.S. loss to Japan in penalty kicks on Sunday.

I don't often get involved in these "Da Bum" discussions, but wow...that sentence is a gem.

Time to start giving Uruguay some real credit. Forlan and Suarez are as dangerous as any up front. Forlan is just clinical in his finishing.

Want proof? Look at the television ratings, look at attendance, look at what is more talked about around the water cooler.

Many of you don't know the numbers on those three things so let me provide them. Ratings

The FIFA Women's World Cup final on Sunday drew a 7.4 U.S. household rating. It is the most watched soccer telecast on ESPN ever with an estimated 13.5 million viewers.

Why the [expletive] does that middle paragraph need to be there? It's like he's trying be the worldly journalist teaching the small town inbreds about life outside of Williston, ND.

Read that quote again but omit the middle thing. Why is it there? Also, why the hell is 'Ratings' randomly on the end of the paragraph?

I'm still reading.

This is just idiotic. Is he trying to compare 2 sports by comparing our National Team in the championship round of the most prestigious tournament of its sport against a league championship game between a US team and a west coast Canadian team?

How about compare the US-Japan game with the US-Canada Gold Medal game last year?

US-Canada: 17.6 Rating

US-Japan: 8.6 Rating

Soccer may very well be becoming more popular than hockey, but these arguments are so stupid its not even funny.

He struggles to get two sentences per paragraph. It's pretty obvious he doesn't understand how they work.

After I read this, I was really excited to read how he was going to provide the numbers on soccer vs. hockey water cooler talk. What a waste of time.

Liverpool have signed US teenager Villyan Bijev according to this report (and others).

My attention to this was drawn by local newspapers who report he will be on loan to RC Genk (who will be defending their title in the Belgian league starting next weekend).

Man U killing the MLS All Stars for the 2nd year in a row. Now up 4-0. Looking to finish the MLS portion of their American tour with an aggregate score of 18-2.

So the best performance against Man U came from the awful Fire? Looks like attending that game was a pretty good decision after all.~

We were in the shade the whole time actually, so we got lucky on that end.

A friend is arguing with me that adding a relagation system to American sports would be the best thing to happen and has no downsides. His big argument is that teams would never have fire sales, or be cheap and limit their spending to a fraction of what the best teams pay, etc.

I'm not at all against relegation, but I can think of a few downsides. Wouldn't have a system like that in place place a value on mediocrity? Meaning, sure we aren't the best but we'll keep fielding this mediocre team with a mediocre payroll because we can't afford to spend like the Yankees, and we can't retool with prospects because we'll be in danger of being sent down. I think in a sport like baseball it would only increase the disparity between the haves and have nots in the league like the EPL is right now with 5 teams competing for the title, 5 trading spots in the middle, and the rest battling relegation. In football it would never work because the league promotes parity. In fact in every league with a cap (aka the other 3 leagues) it wouldnt work without abolishing the cap, lest they potentially put a team like the Cowboys or Lakers in danger of getting sent down at some point.

Anyways, he is a pretty stupid arguer because I've said all that and he can't rebut it, but I'm right here? What advantages am I missing to going to this system? Obviously it would never ever happen but its fun to ponder.

Grant Wahl tweeted an insider told him we wouldn't be surprised by the selection. Klinssmann.
