Neifi Perez, a Cub no more....

traded to the Detroit Tigers.

Cubs phenom from August 19, 2004 to August 20, 2006,

w/ an awe-inspiring batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage of .276, .297, and .384 respectively w/ the Cubs, and highly considered one of the 10 worst Major League players of all time...

Neifi, thank you for the memories!

just added that to my AIM profile. Yes, I'm quite excited by that!

Leyland has had Polanco batting 2nd most of the year. I would say that he probably has better options on his team for batting 2nd then Polanco. Maybe he will bat Neifi 2nd.

edit: Scratch what I said. I just looked at the Tigers team hitting stats. Though there may have been better options than Polanco batting 2nd they really arent obviously better.

Man, this is just the first step in Hendry fullfilling my insane roster plans.

Hendry magically uses Aramis in a trade for A-Rod (no, I'm not quite that crazy to think that it would be a straight-up deal involving just those 2 players).

A-Rod can play SS after Izturis is traded for a moldy car floor mat.

Barrett moves to 3rd.

Catching is covered by Robinson/Fox and Blanco.

Like I said...insane.

But it makes me smile.

Didnt see this posted here, Rotoworld's take:

Chris Robinson-C- Cubs Aug. 20 - 4:06 pm et

Cubs acquired catcher Chris Robinson from the Tigers for infielder Neifi Perez.

Robinson, a 2005 third-round pick, was hitting .288/.338/.367 for Single-A Lakeland. A quality defender, he might have a future as a major league backup. He probably won't hit enough to become a regular.

Neifi Perez-2B- Tigers Aug. 20 - 3:57 pm et

Tigers acquired infielder Neifi Perez from the Cubs for catcher Chris Robinson.

The Tigers needed some infield insurance after losing Placido Polanco, but this was the worst possible choice. Perez, 33, was hitting .254/.266/.343 in 236 at-bats for the Cubs, and he's no longer the Gold Glove-caliber infielder he once was. Not only is he barely worthy of a roster spot these days, but he's due to make $2.5 million next season, making him a big negative even before considering that the Tigers gave up their third-round pick from 2005 to get him. GM Dave Dombrowski should have done better.

BTW, I rejoiced mightily upon hearing news of the trade.

Who replaced Neifi on the roster?

They were talking about Bynum on WGN radio. Yuck. .

Bynum can't even hit AAA pitching at this point. :x

Nice by job by Jim admitting he made a mistake and divesting himself of it. Now do the same with a certain lefthander and we are looking in the right direction...

This must be killing Dusty, BTW.

So, we need to replace neifi with someone who has neifi like qualities. :P

I wonder if this helps force Dusty's hand into making a choice on wanting to come back. I think Hendry wants to make it look like he didn't fire Dusty.

I think we could have actually gotten rid of Rusch if not for his injury-too bad. I doubt we will be able to get rid of him in the offseason because the urgency of needing any pitcher, good or not, will be gone by that point.

I'm an anti-Hendry guy but I have to give Jim props for finding a way to unload this albatross contract, even if it was an albatross of his own creation.

Agreed. Most important, its a strong signal, IMO, that Dusty will not be retained under any circumstances. Jim apparently has awoken to the fact that he likely only has one season to turn this situation around.

BTW, even if this catcher turns out only to be a servicable back up with an avg. bat, that ain't bad, considering who we gave up.

Dusty said:

"Neifi came to play," Baker said. "I know he was maligned some, but he came to play every day. He stayed ready, he worked hard. Neifi's an asset to any team. We hate to lose him."

Dave Dombrowski said:

"He's (Neifi Perez) a legitimate everyday guy and an outstanding utility player," said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.

Robinson, who was hitting .286 with one home run and 47 RBIs at Class A Lakeland, will move on to Class A Daytona. Dombrowski said that Robinson projected as a backup catcher at the Major League level.

Personally I think Neifi can help a team that uses him correctly. Something Baker isn't capable of doing.

That's the thing, up until recently, I didn't hate Neifi, I just hated how he was used. If he was used how he should be, I could've dealt with him as the 25th man. Unfortunately for the Tigers, he'll probably be starting every game.

Robinson, 22, was a third-round pick out of Illinois in 2005. He's considered more of an asset as a catcher than as a hitter, thanks to his arm strength, receiving ability and leadership skills. In 94 games at high Class A Lakeland, he was hitting .288/.338/.367 with one homer and 47 RBIs.
