It's absolutely astonishing that A"STD"U finished with more votes than UCLA (some other sites have the complete vote counts... with Spurrier's requisite Duke vote of course

sadly, UCLA won't have much of a chance to climb up the rankings since the tough part of their schedule is backloaded with their first ranked opponent (ND) waiting for them in October

A fellow UCLA fan? And a UCI fan?

I am not shocked that ASU would be ranked higher than UCLA since all the national media see is Drew Olson, Lewis and Drew gone from last year's team. Personally, I'm just hoping the Bruins are above .500 and Ben Olson has a strong year. I'm pretty excited about the recruiting class for next year. :)

Higher than I expected for Cal.

They're about where I expect them to be. They will win the Pac-10.

No Mizzou? Blasphemy! ;)

I think Auburn is the team to beat this year.

LSU will take care of that!

It wouldn't surprise me to see them winning it all either.

I'll be surprised. LSU has some huge question marks and some of their touted recruits are having trouble getting accademically eligible.

With the talent Carr has year in and year out at UM, he should've won at least one more national title, and he sure as hell should not be having 3-loss seasons every year. He lost 2 of 3 to Tyrone Willingham's pathetic ND teams for crying out loud.

And I'll say it right now: I'm ten times more worried about Penn State than Michigan.

Not me. Michigan the week AFTER Penn State is going to be very, very tough. Then we have to hope we don't have a let down the next week @Michigan State. If we get through the first four weeks unscathed, though, we're going to the championship game. Purdue-Stanford-UCLA-Navy-North Carolina-Air Force-Army are all blow outs waiting to happen. If we're undefeated going into USC, anything but a thrashing puts us in the title game.

I still don't get how Wisconsin doesn't get any respect. Every year it seems like they start the season unranked, and by the end of the year they are in a New Years Day bowl. They completely dominated Auburn in the Capital One Bowl, with a second string defense for the most part, and somehow aren't even ranked.

They have two all-american quality QB's and the nation's number one offense with 9 returning starters and some quality additions on the defense.

You shouldn't be surprised.

I'm assuming you mean anything but a thrashing of Notre Dame by USC. If so, that isn't the case. West Virginia could easily go undefeated as could the winner of the Ohio State-Texas game. With Bomar being done at OU, Texas will be the clear favorite in every other game and, with playing OSU at home, should be the favorite in that game as well. OSU will be the clear favorite in every game but the Texas game. As like last year, the winner of that game will emerge as a clear National Title contender.

That being said, if Notre Dame runs the table, they will be in the title game. But if they barely lose to USC, it's far from a sure bet that they play for the National Title.

No surprises (except perhaps UM at 15 - perhaps they're catching onto Lloyd Carr's penchant for underachievement). I didn't want the Irish to start No. 1, so 3 is fine.

Uh huh. How many D1 teams would love Lloyds career record. He is among the winningest active football coaches in NCAA Division I-A, has won five Big Ten titles, and brought Michigan its first national championship in 49 years. He has led the Wolverines to five Top Ten finishes in the last nine seasons. The Wolverines have played in three Rose Bowl game and one Orange Bowl game under his leadership.

Say what you want about last year, but over his career he is a model of consitancy and almost every AD in the nation would love to have their football program 'underachieve' so much.

ND ranked #1 or #3 whats the difference. They are going to lose to Michigan in the 3rd week of the year anyway. 8)

Ever hear people say Lloyd Carr has done so little with so much. That is why Michigan is so dispespected. I am just waiting on the day when both UM and OSU have losing seasons. That will be funny.

I have some thoughts on a lot of what is posted and of course the poll.

1. OSU lost a lot on defense and probably their best reciever. I understand Smith and Pittman are back but I do think they will have trouble this year. Not going to win NT

2. I cant wait for several Big Games early Auburn/LSU Texas/OSU ND/Mich and ND/Pennst. I really think that ND really better watch out for Mich St and Purdue also. I am going out on a limb and say that ND will only finish 2 and 2 against the Big Ten.

3. I dread saying this I just really think Mich is going to come back strong this year and win the Big Ten. I predicted that they would lose 4 games last year. Another year for Henne, Manningham becomes a starter and if Hart is more healthy with several defensive players back. I see a good year coming. As for Carr until that last couple of years he seemed to win all the big games but would blow a easy one every year. Last year was easily his worst year. Their offense and defense had become very predictable. New cooridinators this year though. I wouldnt put him in my top 5 coaches or anything but he is a big improvement over Moeller and comparable to Bo.

4. I dont know what to think of my Spartans. I think they could go 9-3 or they could go 3-9. I am interested to see if we can make it 6 in a row over ND

So where will the Hogs be ranked after they beat Southern Cal? ;)

I don't see them beating USC, but getting into the top 25 isn't out of the question.

Damn, I love college FB.

ND beat MSU in 2004. The streak you're referring to is 5 straight MSU wins at Notre Dame, which you won't see whether it will continue until 2007.

And the award for dumbest thing said in college football this week goes to...Bo Schembechler! Come on down!

Asked whether Michigan should continue its series with Notre Dame, Schembechler said: "We don't need Notre Dame. They need us more than we need them."

That's not that dumb. Michigan is guaranteed matchups with its conference schedule. Notre Dame has to rely on individual series like this one to build its schedule.

True, but I think it's fair to say that each big conference team should play at least one decent team out of conference, and if Michigan dropped ND, it'd be difficult for them to find another such team to play.

Ok I have yet to read the poll. Someone fill me in where did Illinois check in at, I am guessing 3 maybe 4.
