It's a given Zambrano's the ace.......but who follows him? Prior's injuries and the rookies Marmol, Marshall, Hill, Guzman who knows how this rotation could fill out. Everybody seems to mention Jason Schmidt, but weve been talking about him for years. It should be interesting to see how the rotation fills out next year.

One of our first priorites will defifnetley be a veteran starting pitcher, Since we cant rely on Prior, Hoprfully we can get a schmidt or Zito

They won't get Schmidt or Zito. They will sign an expensive, yet ineffective innings eater. Mark Prior will start game 2 of the season.

Prior is guranteed to start the season on the DL.

Who do you have in mind?

I could see Hendry signing 2 mid-level pitchers like Ohka and Meche rather than 1 Schmidt/Zito.

Which pitchers are free agents after this season? Is there a list anywhere?

I know some of the big names are...........

Schmidt

Zito

Mulder

Petitte

The FA market for SP is going to be really bad. Schimdt and Zito will get overpaid. Marquis will get way more than he should. Weaver, Padilla are guys who could be cheap.

*edit* Trade for Lackey. :D

This I can agree with. .

I really don't have any names in mind actually. That's just what I think they'll go after. And I don't think they'll get 2 either. Just one guy they can pay $5-9m with a moderate guarantee that he'll go 190+ innings. What's Miguel Batista's story? Are the White Sox going to pick up that $10m option on Buerhle? Maybe they'd have interest in Padilla, who after this year should have 200 IP in 3 of last 5 years. Is Marquis a free agent? He's the prototypical ineffective innings eater, a younger Steve Trachsel. Speaking of which.......

Don't forget the top pitcher from Asia who might be coming over.

Maddux, Ohka, Meche, Mussina are all free agents.

I've always thought Padilla had a live arm and wouldn't mind seeing him become a Cub if the price is right.

It seems strange that he's not even 29 yet. I remember talk of getting him in a potential trade of Sosa to the DBacks (at least I remember talk of Padilla, just don't remember if it was Sosa or not). He went straight from a reliever to a 200 IP starter, which probably played a part in his 2004/2005 health issues.

I'm guessing Texas won't have a problem coming up with the cash to keep him.

As a Cub, it would be interesting in the White Sox series when Padilla pitches. In particular when the battery is Padilla and Barrett and AJ is at the plate.

I do think Texas will come up with the cash to keep him, but he does make an interesting option for a middle of the rotation starter.

There's such a demand for pitching that whoever we get, will be overpaid and mediocre. Oh...to be a veteran starter...

We'll rely on our youth again for 2 of the 5 and 2 of the 6, not only are they cheap but players who should be known by the org.

I don't post on this board much, but I'll go on record as saying Randy Wolf is the sleeper of the offseason. He was a legit, durable #2 before his elbow problems started, and he'll be 20-21 months removed from Tommy John when the 2007 season starts--that's fully rehabbed. Tommy John is as reliable as any operation can be these days. He has never had any other pitching injury...at least none that I can find documented on the internet. His only other injury was a sprained ankle he got once from falling on the dugout steps. He will have the injury stigma on his back, though, and may be looking for a one year deal to prove himself. I'd target him.

Wolf is an intriguing option, but I wouldn't consider him on the same par as some of the others mentioned, even if he had never had TJS. I could see Hendry going the Dempster/Williamson/Miller route with him.
