looks like maddux might be going to the padre's instead of the dodgers according to this:

http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cubnt26.html

could only maddux get the cubs kottaras? if so, i hope it happens!

I really think that Colletti and Towers are going to lowball Hendry at the deadline, and Hendry will sit on his hands and ship Maddux to one of those teams on a waiver deal, when they become more desperate. My general feeling is that there are so many teams on the cusp of contention that things will have to clear up a bit more before a real flurry of activity.

i hope thats not the case. maddux seems to be in demand from several teams (dodgers, san diego, maybe the yanks) i would think that the cubs will be able to get something significant in return.

Whatever happens, they might want to get serious about a package. The Dodgers have a lot of young talent that they're probably going to part with, and I'd hate to miss the boat on all of them.

Agreed. I will be disappointed if Maddux isn't traded. Not that I don't like the guy, because I do, but he isn't part of the plans for next year and we should get what we can for him.

I agree, the Cubs should get what they can for Maddux, but with Ned Colletti at the helm for the Dodgers, I doubt he will give them much. Colletti used to work for the Cubs and left the organization with a lot of bad blood. He hates the Cubs. Some have theorized thats why Furcal is in LA right now, just to spite the Tribune. He, among all other GMs, will not want to give a lot in a trade with the Cubs.

colletti will somehow find a way to squander the stockpile of young talent that depodesta left him with, you just watch.

A whole bunch of nothing from Cubs.com.

One player whose name is mentioned as possibly being traded from the Cubs is Greg Maddux, who will be a free agent after this season. The 40-year-old right-hander has a no-trade clause and will have the final say.

"Greg Maddux has earned the right to have discussions with me if people do call about him," Hendry said. "I told Greg Maddux a long time ago that I have no interest in getting rid of him. If people call, I'll let Greg know. I'm not interested in getting rid of Greg Maddux because of his salary or because he may not be back next year. He's earned the right to do what he wants to do."

Maddux could be N.Y. bound: Glavine swaying him to join Mets

July 28, 2006

Chicago Tribune

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry finds himself in a somewhat unusual position: His team has nowhere to go and not much to trade as the interleague deadline approaches Monday.

His only real high-level chip in trade talks is Greg Maddux, who could be pitching for the final time in blue pinstripes Saturday. Maddux has agreed to go to a contender, perhaps even to New York, which previously was believed to be off limits.

Hendry and Maddux have talked about the possibility of leaving the Cubs for a second time, probably for good, even though Maddux says he probably will pitch at least one more year. If he does, it's likely to be with a contender.

Translated: "I still don't understand that Greg Maddux is done and taking up a roster spot that could be filled by one of our young pitchers who could be putting up similar numbers while improving and becoming an extremely important piece for this franchise for years to come. My sensitive side has said she would be sadder than all get-out if Maddux left again, so I am going to hold onto him with all my might."

I love Maddux, he is the best guy in the world. Honestly, we should probably trade him. But I dont want to just dump him... because he has value considering his future HOF status.

If we do trade him, I hope it's not to the Mets! [-( Can't stand them, and don't want to help them. On the other hand, if he's degressed a bit, he might hurt the Mets more than help them.

Trade him to the Padres, Jim. Don't help out the Dodgers, Giants, or Mets! Or Yankees!

I'm confused -- do we have to fleece any of those teams?

Paul Sullivan's take from the comcast roundtable: Maddux will likely stay. Cubs may be asking too much. Maddux not pushing to go, would be fine staying, but also willing to be traded if it's to a contending team. The Dodgers' disappearance may have ruined the best opportunity for trading Maddux.

I don't understand why we're holding on to pieces that aren't in the future. Why not try and get whatever you can for Maddux? The only reason I can see for Hendry not trading Maddux is that Hendry plans on trying to bring Maddux back next year, which would probably be the worst idea possible.

The reason is quite simple - we are the worst organization in professional sports.

Will Carroll is continuously updating his trade column at Baseball Prospectus. It's available as non-subscriber content. Here's the 3pm update on Maddux.

The Padres know that Greg Maddux would be willing to come to them, but the Dodgers involvement in talks with the Cubs might raise the price. As much as I like Maddux, he's been awful since the calendar flipped to May. One exec with knowledge of the talks says that one factor is that he expects Maddux would be "turned on" by being in a pennant chase. Like chemistry and intangibles, excitement doesn't come across the waiver wire. Talent does.

That reminds me of a story Mark Grace once told about Maddux....

On BBTN they were saying the Mets likely have little interest (and most of it is being driven by Glavine). The Padres have cooled on him because their pitching has been good lately, and the Dodgers might be turning off as well due to their recent troubles.
