relief pitching is the new team speed.

thankfully the cubs already have a bunch of it, so hendry may be prevented from getting in on the bonanza.

Baseball Prosepctus's Christina Kahrl has a free article on the trade:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=5305

Her conculsion: "This is a rip-off for the ages--less humiliatingly bad than the infamous Jeff Bagwell-for-Larry Andersen deal, but not by that much."

By the way, Kearns will be playing center for the time being in Washington. How nice would his offensive production look for a CF?

Count me among those who would give Jacque Jones a shot in CF for the Cubs. BP's 2001 comments about Jacque: "He can play center field, so if he’s there, he’s valuable. He can’t hit left-handers, but as a platoon player, he can still be valuable. As a regular in left field, he’s as useful as a pet pig."

Several defensive metrics have rated Jones easily below average as a RF, I don't want him in CF unless he's just holding the spot for the rest of this year.

1) I don't believe that CF is intrinsically more difficult than RF, or at least I don't believe in CF>RF as a blanket statement. Jacque's range might offset his inaccurate arm a little more in CF than in RF.

2) By Davenport's fielding metric, he's just one run below average in RF this year, and his career rate is six runs above average. In 159 career games in CF, he's been quite good. One could cite the defensive metrics to show he's better suited for CF than RF.

I'll still agree with the BP analysis: he's an asset if he's playing CF or if he platoons in RF.

Here's Steve Phillips' take on the trade:

I think on the front end, it's the biggest lopsided trade in the last 10 years, in favor of the Nationals I like the pitchers, because they're good set-up men. The Reds had a bad bullpen, and they had to address it. Lopez and Kearns are 26 year olds who are every day players. Lopez showed he's a two-way player at his position. Kearns is a guy that they have turned down four pitchers for in a deal, previously. Royce Clayton is not predictably a much better upgrade at shortstop that Lopez is. He significantly lacks the pop in his bat that Lopez has. Kearns and Lopez fit the perfect profile for the Nationals as they build they're team for the future. They are young and have room to continue to improve. The fair deal would have been Lopez for Majeski, Brey and Clayton. Clayton has no real value for the Nationals as no team is asking for him on the market. The two pitchers are a good deal for Lopez. I have no idea what value adding Kearns to that deal is. The Reds got nothing in return. It may help them win the wild card this year, but over the long haul, I don't like the deal. This may be one that the Reds come to regret. I've made a few of those myself.

AP[/url]"]CINCINNATI -- Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky sought an explanation Tuesday for why Cincinnati was unaware that reliever Gary Majewski had a sore shoulder when they got him in a trade with Washington.

The Reds didn't know that the right-hander had a cortisone injection in his shoulder before the All-Star break. Majewski was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday after telling the team that his shoulder has bothered him since spring training.

..........

Krivsky left a telephone message Tuesday morning for Nationals general manager Jim Bowden. Majewski and reliever Bill Bray were the keys in an eight-player deal on July 13 that sent outfielder Austin Kearns and shortstop Felipe Lopez to Washington.

"I did call him, and I have not heard back," Krivsky said. "I just wanted to have a conversation."

...............

"I don't like eliminating teams," Krivsky said. "Hopefully people feel when they deal with us, they're dealing straight up. And I want people to feel like they're being dealt with honestly.

"For me, your credibility is paramount, not only with (the media) but with other teams and the fans and your ownership. You lose your credibility, you're done in this business."

so they basically got a lefty reliever that can give you 3 innings a week for two guys that will give you a combined 40 ab's a week. good deal.

Although I wouldn't really want to see it since they're in our division, a part of me wishes Selig would step in and award the Reds Chad Cordero as punishment for the Nationals grossly acting in bad faith.

And those 40 ABs will be pretty decent too.
