Why does nobody in the media understand the concept that it can stunt a team's long term development to have a manager fighting for his job despite being out of the playoff race?

I keep hearing everyone on TV and the radio say that there's no point in firing Baker now and hiring and interim manager, but that the Cubs should just wait until the end of the season and make a change then. Dusty Baker is bad enough for a team, but a lame duck Dusty Baker is even worse!

I'll bet a month of premium with the first person who takes me up on it that Dusty will survive the break.

Teams avoid making big announcements during the ASB as an unwritten rule, but even if you extend your 'Dusty survives' time frame to a week from today I'd still be on your side. I don't see Dusty getting fired unless (until?) they go into another long funk, 5-6 game losing streak at least.

Isn't it ironic that Hendry supposedly was waiting for a win streak that never happened to announce Baker's contract extension and now he might be waiting for the team to lose some games so he can fire him.

If he doesn't fire Baker immediately, he needs to publicly acknowledge that the season is over and that they are going to start re tooling for next year. That takes the pressure off Baker to run Zambrano, Eyre and Howry out there until they need surgery. It also makes playing Nevin and Perez on a regular basis inexcusable.

I'm noncommittal. On the one hand there has to be at least a grain of truth in all these rumors. On the other hand...this is Jim Hendry.

:ball:

I'm waiting.

Really and truely, if Hendry doesn't plan on re-uping Dusty he should do everyone a favor and end this soap opera.

I feel like a idiot defending baker in 2004-2005. :?

Listen, we all make mistakes. I remember thinking the Cubs should have signed Omar Daal in 2003.

The important thing is that we don't hold it against you.

Since Dusty's job is now "safe," then we can only assume this is an acceptable level of performance for the Cubs.

Aren't you glad Daddy raised (ehem.....enslaved....ehem) you as a Cub fan?

No one raised me a Cubs fan. I chose this life of misery. No one to blame but myself.

Still waiting. I have no hope that Hendry or anyone else in the Trib-Cubs offices will act to improve this team over the long-term, much less the short-term.

Business as usual.

It's been embarrassing for awhile and they haven't acted.

today is another new low though. tomorrow is an off-day. we just lost a series again.

It feels like the time is right for a bomb to be dropped.

Wait a minute. The Cubs are off again tomorrow?

Personally, I don't think this team has done anything to earn a day off.

At least they won't lose.

Wait. This is the Cubs. It wouldn't shock me in the least to hear they lost on an off day. All my life this team has found new and creative ways to lose.

If Hendry doesn't fire someone tomorrow, the whole management team should be sent packing. He doesn't even necessarily have to fire Dusty right now. But he has to fire SOMEONE.

But the odds of that happening are slim and none.
