Gammons on Samardzija

I know, it is Gammons, so take it with a grain of salt, but when they were talking about Samardzija on BBTN, Gammons "reported" the Cubs were close to signing, Sammy to a "reported" $8 million dollar major league contract :shock: , which instantly blew my mind. If THIS was true, then the Cubs are truly trying to convince Samardzija to give up football.

 

To which got me thinking....what would it take to get Samardzija to give up football for good?

Brady Quinn will most likely go #1 in the 2007 NFL draft assuming he doesn't get hurt this year so Samardzija would only be good enough for #2 at best. That's assuming no wide receivers enter early as well. The Cubs are probably trying to trump any money that he could get in the NFL.

8 million spread over a number of years isn't that bad. Gammons says 8 millon dollar contract not signing bonus. If it gets the Cubs a top prospect from a fifth round pick considering there lack of picks this year it's a great move.

Am I the only one who read this and thought "What the heck are they bringing Sosa out of retirement for $8mil for? And what does that have to do with Samardzija?" :wink:

 

It will be a long time before any reference to 'Sammy' in any Cubs conversation will not bring Sosa to mind.

He will still play his final year of football. Gammons mentioned that the deal would be for 500K up front and the rest coming later in the deal and my guess is it would likely be tied to him remaining in the Cubs system (i.e. still playing baseball). Samardzija apparently will sign and report to Boise, then return in August to start practice for his senior year of ND football.

 

The deal gives Samardzija some nice leverage going into the NFL Draft. If he doesn't like which team drafts him or isn't given enough of a signing bonus, he can just ditch football, get the rest of his 7-figure bonus from the Cubs, and focus on pitching.

I thought he was hitting 93-94 with his fastball and that he had a pretty good slider as well? Most college baseball players train for baseball year-round, Samardzija probably trains very little for baseball except for just before and during the season. He's got some potential and I think he's got room for improvement. I know that our system has had a problem with developing some arms recently, but I think he's got enough natural talent to overcome that to a certain extent.

Correct, but as I've read about him, he would have been a much more polished and sought after pitcher had he simply stuck to baseball instead of balancing both out.

 

No matter the case, $8m in guaranteed money is hard to walk away from.

The $8mil is the contract value, I think that part of his advisor's trip to Chicago will be to hammer out the signing bonus and the proration of the contract.

Unfortunately for baseball plans, signing bonuses in the NFL are skyrocketing. The 20th pick, where some have Samardzija projected, got 6.7 million in guaranteed money last year (Marcus Spears). Mel Kiper has Samarzija as 7th on his big board. The Vikings selected a wide receiver in that spot in 2005, and T. Williamson got 13.3 million guaranteed. Both of these numbers should be sharply up with the 2007 draft, where I think the 20th pick will get well over 8 million guaranteed. The Cubs best hope is that the same thing that happened in the MLB draft happens in the NFL draft, and teams shy away from Samardzija because of his wanting to play two sports.
