How do you like me now?

Now that I'm on my way...Ok sorry for the cheesy country song, but how are those Prior-haters feeling now? So far tonight he's gone 6IP 4H 1 unearned run 9/1 K/BB. That brings his minor league numbers to 18IP 15H 6ER 21/3 K/BB and he's felt great after each start. I know that minor league success doesn't necessarily equal major league success but this is a very good start.

Those stupid someone-hater terms agrivate me. It is just a way of grouping those whom one disagrees with together into a group.

Furthermore, WHO hates prior here? There were those who were skeptical, but no one hated him. OF COURSE they were skeptical, his velocity was not to be found in his first start.

I recall several threads recently ready to give up on Prior and try to trade him for whatever we could get for him. Maybe hater is the wrong term but I'd say quite a few people had all but given up on him ever being productive again.

Wanting to trade Prior =/= hating Prior

I would agree with that if people were wanting equal value for Prior's talent, even with the injury problems. I think that is a little bit different when people are advocating cutting our loses and just salvaging a minor leaguer for him. Like a said, maybe "hate" was the wrong word, but alot of people had all but given up on him and turned their back to him.

Prior's night is done after 6.2 innings 4H 1R/0ER 10/1 K/BB. So his final minor league stats (assuming this was his last start) aren't bad:

18.2IP 15H 6ER 22/3 K/BB 2.89ERA

Don't forget that comes to  0.98 WHIP. If he velocity comes back, maybe 2007 might not be a longshot.

I don't think the velocity will be that big of a deal; it will be mentioned but it shouldn't affect his game too much as long as he mixes his pitches and his speeds good enough.

Hey I like that cheesy song!!! Anyways, I am excited for Prior's return and he has supposedly been looking good. Hopefully he can give us a bit of a boost. He is still like a week away, isn't he?

What is he throwing? Last I heard was around 90, has he shown any improvement?

It shouldn't, and I agree. BUT....Prior was most effective---when heatlhy---throwing between 93-95. If he is only throwing 88-91, then.....he could be hurt by ML hitters.

Don't forget after his first rehab start, the leader of the Mark Prior Chicken Little army chimed in with this:

From Will Carroll at BP:

Kerry Wood struck out everyone--including the peanut vendor and the visiting radio announcer--when he was in Peoria. “Unhittable,” one scout told me. That same scout saw Mark Prior pitch on Monday night and struggled to find words. He sighed and groaned before finally saying something I can’t print here. “There was nothing right with him. No velocity (a max of 90). No command. No movement. No missed bats. No consistency--his stride was never the same and his arm was slow. If he wasn’t Mark Prior, I’d say he was at the right level. I have no idea what happened to him.” Prior only went two innings before hitting his pitch count and now we’ll have to wait to see how he recovers. Not only did he show only a bit more velocity, but the absent control might be even more worrisome. Prior will have one more rehab start at Peoria, but at this stage, it might be time to think about slowing this down. One observer reminded me of another pitcher who lost it--Roy Halladay. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs can be as forward-looking as the Blue Jays once were.

Personally I think Rotoworld.com summed it up the best...

The Cubs might as well activate him to start Sunday, though a decision won't be made for a couple of days. The longer they wait, the more likely it is that he'll get hurt again before he contributes at all.

Rotoworld spot on as usual.

Moe Moe Moe!!

How do ya like me, how do ya like me?

Why don't you like me? Nobody likes me...

But all Simpsons aside, Prior's start tonight gives me hope that the kid isn't done yet. And yes I say kid knowing that he is in fact a year older than me. His ERA was down, and he wasn't walking guys tonight. The 9 K's are also a good sign to me because that shows he's consistently hitting his spots when he really needs to. I'm not sure I'm sold on the idea of him coming back yet though. I'm torn between giving him one more minor league start or bringing him back to the team and seeing if he can keep this up. But I guess it has gotten to the point where we have to handle him with kid gloves. I just pray for no more shoulder injuries... or any injuries at all for that matter.

I usually agree with you, roast. But I have to say, there are definitely some Prior "haters" on this board. The ones who like to call him a pansy, wuss, etc. (Some even pinning steroid accusations on him).

So texascub, I'm right there with you, man.

Funny how an infection caused him to miss 2 months of pitching in the major leagues. I like the Kid. But Hendry will be a fool if he relies on Prior as anything more than a #5 next year. That basically means build your pitching staff around ZAMBRANO and a star pitching aquisition. NOT prior.

Except for the part about the strain in his shoulder(right?) I agree with the original tone, there are definitely Prior haters on this board who lump him in with Wood unfairly.

Hendry has done and will do A LOT worse things than relying on Mark Prior to be something more than a #5 next year.

Prior is one of my favorite players. But I have been concerned about what's been going on with him since spring training.

Glad to hear about the strong outing tonight and looking forward to seeing him in a Cubs uni. I have more confidence in him than I do the organization he pitches for.
