Our youngsters working out of the pen have been really bad this year. It doesn't matter if they brought up Novoa, Aardsma, Wuertz they all have been terrible.

Williamson is sick and Dempster has left the team to be with his wife who is expecting.

Our bullpen is going to be spectacular the next few days.

You're right. It has been TERRIBLE. At one point Hendry showed the potential to be a really good GM, 2 years later he has shown just how bad he really is.

Why did he only give Ryu one chance to start? Obviously he ignored the fact that the wind was blowing out today. Guzman and Hill each had 4 starts so there is no reason that Hendry should be sending Ryu back down after 1 start. Obviously it was worse than any of the starts Guzman and Hill had, but it's still just one start. At least give the guy a chance to redeem himself.

I think the original plan was to only start him once in place of Wood.

And then stay in the pen for a period of time. If they really planned to send down Wuertz, bring up Ryu for a day to start, then send him down for Aardsma they're even more incompetent than I realized. Complete lack of consideration for contingencies.

That makes sense because the Cubs have an off day on Thursday. But after that the Cubs play 11 games in a row. Who is going to be the fifth starter then? Prior isn't going to be ready by then and Rusch shouldn't be starting. So who takes the fifth starter spot then?

Probably Rusch. Either that or they're counting on having Prior back in that period, which is probably not a good idea.

If they skip the fifth spot due to the off-day, they could bring Ryu back up next time through the rotation. By then he will have been down the required 10 days. Other options would be to bring Williams, Hill, or Guzman back up, or to call up Marmol from West Tenn and see what he can do. Starting Rusch is NOT an option; he's proven time and time again, both as a starter and a reliever, that he can't be used in anything but mopup duty this year.

is hendry just throwing you know what against the wall seeing what sticks?

Sort of but not really. What I've been told is that he's got a special set of dice that he uses to make his decisions. One die is for who he's going to send down, and the other is for who he's going to call up. He's also got a magic 8-ball that he uses for trade decisions, and lately it's on a no streak.

I can confirmed that said "magic 8-ball" is now officially injuried and will be place on the 60 day DL retroactive to December 7, 2005.

This according to the little voices in Hendry's head....

I hate the skipping-the-5th-spot routine under the current circumstances: (1) rookie pitcher coming off an injury-shortened season and who hasn't thrown more than 95 innings professionally or in college; (2) one-sore-armed pitcher returning from shoulder surgery; and (3) one 40-yr-old pitcher who hasn't been pitching well recently (Maddux can throw his innings, but how often do you want to go to a 4-man with him?). Z will say that he can throw hundreds of pitches every other day and he might have to if this keeps up.

Even though seeing Rookie #5 take some lumps is painful, I'd rather see that than running the current arms ragged for no good reason (unless you consider a desperate attempt to cobble together two wins in a row so that they can announce Dusty's extension a "good reason").

Rusch will be the 5th starter. There was a quote from dusty on Cubs.com under the Saturday game recap.

Yay!!!

May as well just forfeit that game and not risk injury. If Dusty is really stupid enough to start Rusch, it's an automatic loss anyway.

the cubs have to quit calling a guy up for a couple starts, then sending him back down after he fails. a guy who hasn't pitched much in the bigs is going to have some growing pains. if you send a guy out after three rough starts and bring up another guy, the new guy will have the same growing pains. you just have to ride somebody out.

start rusch or bring up williams to start. the cubs will just kill the trade value and confidence of these other guys.

maybe guzman will be ready by august.
