If this is true, I'm excited to see what this kid can do for us.

I've been hearing about this kid for three friggin years - I am PSYCHED to see what he can do at the MLB level. I just hope that if he tears it up, they won't immediately ship him out for Doug Mientkewicz or some other scrub that can't help us near as good as a strong and healthy Guzman.

I doubt it. Hendry has to keep an eye to the 2007 rotation with the possibility of, at least, 2/ 5 of this year's anticipated starters nolonger being with the club. The Cubs will need some quality arms. If Guzman pitches well I think he'll start for the Cubs next year.

Substitute Marshall for Wood, and you'd have a nice rotation. I think JH may pass on Kerry after this season.

My guess is that Wood and Maddux are the two out next year although Wood has a mutual option in 2007.

Zambrano and Prior are really the only locks for 2007 right now but I imagine that Marshall, Guzman, and possibly Hill will be given the opportunity to win a spot. The Cubs may also attempt to sign Miller if he pitches decently this year.

 at your SP. No way! No way are you going to ask me as a Cubs fan, to put any more friggen hope on Wood and Prior. Wave goodbye the Wood, and call Prior your 5th starter as a bonus if he even starts the season off the DL (which he won't). . If Maddux pitches extremely well this year I wouldn't mind extending him a year or 2.

Zambrono

Maddux

Solid #3 FA

Marshall/Miller/Guzman

Prior/Marshall/Miller/Guzman/Ryu/Hill

I'm ready to start the friggen season with an actual starting pitching staff (you know, all 5 guys ready and pitching all their games from game 1). You have to get a solid #2 or #3 guy next year that way you can push everybody else down on the depth list. Only expecting them to be good #4 at best, less pressure and a much better starting staff. .

I really hope Wood comes back and pitches awesome so the Cubs don't let him go. I can't imagine him on any other team. Come on Woody!

I too hope wood will be good and not suck.

Also, WOO for a potential guzman start. WOO WOO.

And boo for it being a 1:20 game, on a school day.

Why is everybody saying Wood/Prior? Don't count on them plain and simple. Let Wood go. Bye bye woody!! And count Prior as a bonus BACKUP 5th starter. .

Zambrano

solid #2 FA

Maddux

Marshall/Miller/Guzman

Marshall/Miller/Guzman/Ryu/Rusch/Williams/Prior/FA#5.

I want a pitching staff that all start the season strong and ready to pitch. And pitch all year. No more freakin depending on Wood and Prior. .

Ok just wanted to post it where it wasn't so cluttered in the mass reply thread. Explain to me why you (if you) would want to rely on Wood and Prior again. And why you think they will finally start pitching full years out of spring training? To say oh well we have different opinions is the easy way out, but explain why, after all the heartache. You'd want to go into 2007 with them near the top of your line-up.

BTW I actually changed it a bit. So I didn't post the exact same thing twice. I went from getting a #3 starter to a #2. Because we need to GET solid top of the order guys instead of relying on Prior or Wood to be there.

First of all, I never provided a preferred rotation order. I merely stated the names I thought had the best chance to be retained as well as those I'd like to see return.

I said we had different opinions because I didn't feel like explaining myself... Plus, when you say "don't count on them plain and simple" you don't sound like you're open to hearing opposing views and you aren't taking into account that they may both be healthy and pitch well this year.

When they're healthy they are good to great pitchers. In Wood's case, I have already stated that he is my favorite Cubs player so I hope for nothing but good things for and from him. Additionally, I am hoping that the surgery has repaired his shoulder so that he can pitch consistently like he did between 2001-03. Prior is under contract with the Cubs through 2008 so again, I hope that he will provide good things this year and in the future. Projecting him as a 5th starter isn't very logical from my standpoint but I do think that Hendry will work hard to fill the other spots in the rotation, and perhaps an extra starter, so that the team isn't caught off guard should an injury occur.

So now you have ESP and know that Prior will start next year on the DL?
Posted
I love Maddux but there is now way we should sign him, if he pitches well enough that signing him would be an option he'll be too expensive. I'd rather count on Prior being healthy for '07 than Maddux being anything but a decent #5 next year.

Because most of Prior's injuries have been fluke occurences, and claiming to know he is going to(or even that there's a good likelihood of him) start the year on the DL is foolish. Additionally the hope is you have Guzman, Hill, and Marshall all ready to contribute as at least league average starters so all the Joe Morgans of the world can be happy that Prior and Wood are only considered as extras.
