I've purposefully stayed awey from the board after the Lee injury, so I apologize if Pena has been brought up, but hed be the best option to replace Lee. I saw Craig Wilson mentioned, not gonna happen. (as a side note, the karma is ridiculous) The Yanks signed Pena to a minor league deal last week and although I'm not sure if he can opt out, Torre's comments have alluded to the fact that hes not getting called up anytime soon. Basically hes just insurance for Giambi. He can't be a platoon partner because he too is a lefty. If he can't get out of the contract, then I'm sure the Yanks would take a minor leaguer for him. Pena is excellent defensively and has very above average power. He does strike out a lot (and I do mean a lot) and although he cant hit for average, he at least walks a decent amount so his OBP is around average. All in all, I think Pena is the only realistic replacement option that can OPS 800. However, according to a Tigers fan friend of mine, hes about the streakiest hitter ever.

I brought him up, I think it'd only take a low level pitching prospect to get him. He's the most reasonable option IMO.

go after him or petagine.

Pentagine's a worse fielder than Durazo.

I wouldnt mind him at 1b until Lee returns and could provide excellent power off the bench after. He is an extremely streaky hitter and his inablilty to hit for avg or post a great OBP are big detractors however.

Besides the fact that I don't trust defensive metrics much at all, Petagine's career high in the majors is 124 ABs, hardly enough for a metric to measure anything whatsoever.

What we want is someone who we won't mind having as a bat off of the bench when DLee is back. Choi or Pena would qualify in my mind. And neither would cost us much.

It'd be better to have a right handed power source off of the bench.

Then we would be talking about guys like....Andy Phillips, Eduardo Perez, Jeff Conine, etc, etc.

But none of those "type bats" will be available till June, or July. So I think the Cubs are pretty much stuck with what they got, or bring up Sing, and hopefully a call to the majors would restart his year. Either way...I don't see the Cubs making a trade anytime soon.

okay, so you're basing your statement that he's a worse fielder than durazo on what? have you even seen the guy play baseball?

defensive metrics, as unreliable as some are, are still going to be a way better measure of a player's defensive ability than your limited (if it even exists) observation. you say his "career high is 124 ABs, hardly enough for a metric to measure anything whatsoever" - so what are you measuring it based on? certainly you haven't seen every play he's ever made in the majors, but any defensive metric is going to measure that. how on earth do you think that you can make a legitimate evaluation of petagine's defensive value when you discredit any and all defensive metrics because the sample size isn't large enough? the sample is surely larger than any sample you have, so why aren't you admitting that your evaluation is heavily flawed?

Cubs | Reports of interest in Sweeney false, says GM

Sun, 23 Apr 2006 23:30:25 -0700

The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry refuted rumors that the Cubs were interested in Kansas City Royals 1B/DH Mike Sweeney.

I find it disturbing that Hendry had to REFUTE this story. The ONLY reason why Hendry would EVEN consider Sweeney, is if Lee would be out longer then the 2 months. Which I found doubtful.

And did anybody here see the Cards picking up stud OF Timo Perez from the Reds. It's moves like this...that will keep the Cubs in the hunt.

I hoping Hendry can pull off some kind of miracle and get Craig Wilson. Perfect player for the situation the Cubs are in: 1B, platoon RF, and right-handed power hitting bat off the bench. On top of all that he doesn't have a long term contract, so Hendry can make the decision later in the year to sign him and bring him back for 2007.

I'm going off of what I've heard from scouts and fans of Petagine. He's played 53 innings at 1st in the majors since '98. No defensive metric means anything with that kind of sample.

Eric Hinske?? Rios is staking his claim to what was supposed to be a platoon. He hit well in the spring and is continuing to do so through April. I can't imagine it would take too much to get him.

Hinske's a decent option, but I don't see him being much of a difference from Mabry, except with power. I think the Cubs need a RH bat in there.

How about.................................Hee Seop Choi?

Absolutely not on Hee Seop Choi. That guy is a bum. That would be bad news.

And based on what do you call him a bum? That's pretty strong.

call Arizona and see what they would want for Tony Clark. We could than turn him around to a AL team before the deadline.

I agree with that. I think Tony Clark is by far the best option out there. I don't think you up and trade him though as soon as Lee is healthy. I think he could bring some valuable power off the bench for us down the stretch....

And he does a 1.000 fielding % in the outfield.... :D

I don't think it's possible to be a worse fielder than Erubial Durazo.

Don't know where the Choi hate comes from. He's not a great ballplayer, but he can get on base and provide a little pop. Decent with the glove, too. Everyone is under the assumption Tony Clark will come on the cheap, but I'm not sure if AZ will just give him up. He's valuable, cheap, and we're bent over a barrel. Choi doesn't ahve Clark's rep, so he might come easier.

But Arizona has Jackson, Green, and Tracy who can all play some first base, pretty much making Tony Clark a very expensive redundant player. But, I don't think Ari would do it less then a solid young reliever, perhaps a 5th starter.
