I know it's a ridiculously small sample..... be let's hope it's at least a sign of better days ahead.

Well, with the way our batters are struggling at the plate (last night as an example), I hope he can continue to produce. I couldn't understand why Dusty moved JJ out from the lineup last night. It didn't make any sense, considering that he was the only Cub to at least hit Lowe.

I'm sure it was all about favoring his healing injury.

Good point. I forgot about the hammy injury.

Fred, do you have your own little database you work with and update?

Cause I would sure like to get a look at that thing.

Yeah, I think since he had that GS aganist the Cardinals, he has been struggling offensively.

He had a nice 3 for 4 with a HR against Cincinnati on 11 April..... then down the tubes.

*nods in agreement*

I see Corey Patterson hit a HR for the Orioles.

He must have sold his soul to Satan.

I don't see how you can rag on Mabry getting his first start in left...against a righty who Mabry has seen, if you want to put Mabry in the lineup, this is as good a game as any to give him a start.

Noteworthy Match-ups (Chicago Cubs) Vs. Brad Penny (Righty, 2-0, with a 1.50 ERA in 2006

Noteworthy Match-ups (LA Dodgers) Vs. Sean Marshall (Lefty, 1-0, with a 7.71 ERA in 2006)

No current Dodger has ever faced Marshall in the regular season. It's pretty sad, they dont even have a Player Card/page for Marshall on ESPN.com.

Here's to mutant Aardsma getting called out of the pen!

I wouldn't necessarily say Mabry has an advantage over Murton against Penny because Mabry has "seen" Penny before. The lefty-right matchup is a valid reason though.

Yep... sure do.

You smug old bugger!

Let me put it this way, any advice for those of us wanting to build one?

I don't know that it has anything to do with Mabry & Penny. It just seems to me that if Dusty once to rest Murton once every 14 games..... well, it's just not that big of a deal.

I agree with you on that one. Murton needs a rest. But AlwaysaCub made it sound like it was partly due to Mabry having seen Penny before. Obviously that isn't the only reason.

I'm just nitpicking. I apologize.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come off as smug. As far as advice on building databases goes, use the program that you're most familiar with, and let the information you want to retrieve from your database determine what and how you put into it.

All I'm doing is entering the information from the daily box score that's published in various sources. There are limitations to this.... i.e. I'll never be able to generate lefty/right splits or specific pitcher to batter splits. I just made that decision based on the fact that I'm too damned lazy to do any more input that just the boxscore.

In any case, go for it !! ... and have fun !

Ok, so yours isn't completely over-the-top.

Looks like there's a hole in the market for me to fill then.

I have a friend offering to build a database program that'll allow me all sorts of cross-referencing abilities. My only problem is going to be inputting massive amounts of data, and figuring out which items to flag.

Thanks for the advice. :)

Forget about your friend. The knowledge you gain by doing it yourself is worth more than anything you will ever get out of the database.

Also, if you know of a ready source of more detailed raw data than what the bpxscore gives, and is available on a daily basis...... let me know !!

I might stop by for that. More likely, I'll go to Fresno since the I-Cubs are playing Fresno during the weekend.

If you're coming to Fresno for the games look me up. I plan to go to at least three of those games if I can, although will be taking the wife to at at least one.

Yeah, but the friend is offering to do it for free as a project for one of his classes, and then just hand it over to me. And lazy as I am, that sounds like a win-win proposition to me.

I plan on starting off with probably around 1985, and grabbing everything from retrosheet. Problem is that they don't have anything from 2005 yet, and I don't know when it's coming.

This is definately going to be a work in progress for quite a while...

Speaking of low batting averages, Ramirez is starting to worry me a little. He's got to start knocking runs in. I hope he starts to get it going. Also, was Zambrano really only throwing 85-89 last night like that gun said? Erye's and Howry's usual velocity was about the same on that gun as other guns.

Does anyone know why, on MLB Radio, Vin does the first three innings and then turns it over to Charlie Steiner and some other guy?
