That's the problem. He hasn't shown the ability to stay healthy.

He threw over 200 innings in 2002 and 2003. He hasn't been healthy in 2004-2005. We'll have to see if he's finally back to form. But it's not like he's never had a 200 inning season. He has. Twice. Back to back.

Also, we would have never been in the NLCS in 2003 if it weren't for Wood. That game five in Atlanta was masterful.

The problem with throwing Wood into relief is that you're basically encouraging him to let it all hang out. Heck, some people were talking about bringing back his slurve as a reliever.

The problem is, that just exacerbates the problem. He'll lose his release point. His mechanics will become increasingly violent and dangerous to his arm. At least as a starter, he'll have to take it easy if he wants to make it through the 6th inning, ya know? Plus, as a reliever, there is always the danger of overuse (see: last year when he came out of the bullpen and pitched the day before his surgery). At least there's a five day limit on using him as a starter, ya know?

I'd rather keep him in the rotation for the rest of the year. He'll be more valuable there if he's healthy. If he's not, then just let him go at the end of the year and only bring him back if it's for a cheaper contract.

If he's hurt, he's hurt. If he's healthy, he needs to be starting. It's not like he would be bumping someone better. Our bullpen is loaded, Kerry makes a ton of money, and our rotation is patchwork.

Why in God's name would anyone want to pay a potentailly dominating starter a huge salary to sit in the pen where he isn't needed? If he is healthy, he is one of the best. If he isn't, we're no worse off than we are now.

Putting him in the pen would make less than zero sense.

Define "an extended time".

Don't bite. He's just trolling, methinks.

NO! I'm a HUGE Cubs fan. I've just given up on Wood

It's really too bad this happened to Wood. Seems like a really good guy. I, for one, hope he comes back and pitches to his potential and the Cubs pick up his option. I can't imagine Wood pitching in any other uniform.

I'll bite b/c it's already been answered:

93 Starts between 2001-2003.

I think it's only natural to get excited about the return of a player of Kerry Wood's calibre, even if the player is injury-prone. I'm looking forward to seeing the standing ovation Kerry will get when he takes the mound for the first time this year at Wrigley.

just because someone isn't high on wood anymore doesn't mean they're a troll

True. There are a lot of people who aren't high on Wood that I haven't accused of trolling, too.

I would like to see Wood throwing that Slurve around 5-10 times a game to give those one more thing to think about.

Wood threw 30 pitches today in his session and will throw BP on Thursday in some different situations. They'll make the decision then.

Prior threw 50+ pitches in three different sessions and felt good, according to Rothschild. He'll throw a side on Wednesday and then face hitters in a BP session on Friday.

I would like to think that true Cubs fans would give a guy who essentially won our only playoff series in some 80s years by himself a bit more leeway as he works to come back from an injury. I'll always be a Woody backer.

Kap said something about Woody thinking he'll be rehabbing for a week I thought in the Minors (2 starts) starting next week. I don't think this is official at all though.

It's a pretty safe guess, though. His pitch count should be high enough after two minor league rehab starts. If that's the case, he could be pitching on 4/25 and 4/30 with a return to the mound in San Diego on 5/5.

He also hit my absolute favorite home run of all time in the 2003 NLCS.

Please tell me that Peoria plays at home those days and that is where Wood will go :D

Iowa is home with day games for both of those dates. He would have probably gone with Iowa regardless, though.
