PITCHING IN: With a rotation this weekend in Pittsburgh of Sean Marshall, Jerome Williams and Glendon Rusch, one more name must be included when that group is mentioned: right-hander Angel Guzman.

If any of this weekend's trio falters and the Cubs are forced to go to the minors for immediate help, Guzman tops the list right now over left-hander Rich Hill.

Guzman is off to a strong start at Class AAA Iowa after pitching well in spring training. He and Carlos Zambrano are close friends, and Guzman's arrival in Chicago would put Zambrano, 24, in the position of being a guidance counselor to Guzman, also 24, in both on-field and off-field matters.

I almost wish that Rusch gets rocked on Sunday but we still win in order to see him moved to the 'pen.

Bruce Miles also implies the same thing in his article today.

The Cubs won’t sit still and watch their rotation take a beating. Angel Guzman is waiting in the wings at Class AAA Iowa, and it won’t take much for the Cubs to bring him up if they feel the need.

In fact, the Cubs like the way Guzman, Rich Hill and Jae Kuk Ryu all are throwing at Iowa.

Well we're movin on up,

To the east side.

Movin on up,

To the east side.

We finally got a piece of the pie.

Doesn't it feel good to finally be talking about Guzman pitching for the big club. with his luck, though, his arm will fall off during his next start.

If Rusch is the guy removed from the rotation, what are they going to do with him? The bullpen is an option as a long man, he's shown to be better as a starter though. All the more reason that signing him to a 2 year deal was a mistake this off season.

In truth, if Rusch isn't stating, he's not worth much to us. We have enough arms in the pen and even more if needed at Iowa. If the Cubs decide Rusch is no longer good enough to start, I'd DFA him and hope someone claims him off waivers.

how much of his salary do we have to pay?

All of it if no one claims him. A pro-rated portion if someone claims him.

Angel's control still doesn't appear to be 100%.

It won't happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing Hill start Sunday with Rusch going to the bullpen.

Yup, definitely agree.

Guzman still sounded rusty and had some problems with the control - especially his breaking pitches - despite not walking anyone.

Hill starts tomorrow, Ryu Sunday.

Now hold on, he may be on to something.

I'd give them Harvey too if the Astros agreed to start Glendon every 5th day for the rest of his contract.

I don't mind giving Williams a shot to start. But why are we letting Rusch start again? Why don't we give Hill or Ryu a chance to if Guzman's control isn't up to par? As for Rusch going to the Astros, I would much rather see him go to the American League so we don't have to face him again. You know he would pitch one of those "I'm going to show my old team why they shouldn't have let me go" type games. It's virtually guaranteed.

I think we should let Guzman get some innings under his belt. I wouldn't bring him up until later in the year. Remember we are going to be getting back three pitchers here in the next month or so. I do agree that Rusch is terrible coming out of the bullpen.

yea, I'm thinking Rusch and the juicebox are a good mix. he'd hurt the astros quite a bit.

Jerome Williams held up his end of the bargain and had a quality start. Let's hope Rusch can pull his head out of a dark place and pitch a similar game tomorrow to afford the Cubs the opportunity to win the series.

Somehow, I'm not holding my breath though. At least Arroyo don't play for Pittsburgh.

If you're keeping score at home:

Guzman: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER (Brownlie allowed 1 inherited), 8/0, 1 HR

Hill: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 10/1

Williams: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3/4

Rusch and Ryu pitch tomorrow.
