It looked like he had an opportunity to get back really fast behind Hatteberg's back. Even when Lee was right near first, he didn't just quickly stick his foot out to get back. I doubt he realized what was going on.

Exactly. It would have tipped Hatteberg off to the idea that he COULD tag Lee. By casually strolling back to first, Hatteberg didn't get it.
