As you can see from my information, I have been a card carrying member for many years, including a move to the Iowa Great Lakes two years ago, yet I don't post much. It's too much fun to read everyone else's materials. Anyway, I don't want to cause any controversy yet every morning when I wake up at 5, I read three different versions of the same thing - Cub information from the Tribune, the Herald and the Sun Times. It seems that all of the quotes are the same and so are the story lines. Which paper is preferred by everyone here? I know Bruce Miles has graced the forums on occasion so I like to read him, the Trib is the only one I know that shows the box score on line and the Sun Times seems to have the most stories. Not that I'm crunched for time, just wondering if I had to read only one Chicago newspaper on the Cubs, which one would be best? Anxiously awaiting answers.

I think this year will be a tough year for the Cubs in the media. With the White Sox winning it all last year, there is going to be a lot more Sox articles than we're used to. But I've always like the Sun Times better. Just seems like a better paper to me. It's all a matter of personal preference. The one thing you have to get used to in the Sun Times is the amount of columnists that are clearly Sox fans. There are a lot of snide comments (or flat out mockery) about the Cubs and their fans. And of course, you'll have to put up with Jay Mariotti. But if you have a bird, his columns make for a great liner for their cages.

I always glean headlines from prosportsdaily.com...they're pretty good about centralizing headlines from all of the major Chicago newspapers into one source, including the Trib, Suntimes, Daily Herald, and the little known Daily Southtown. You can also easily see from their cubs page what the media outlets from the other markets are saying about the Cubs, which I really like.

But of the three chicago newspapers, I like the herald the best. For stats and boxscores, I usually use Sportsline.com.

I read the Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily Southtown, and Daily Herald online everyday. Each paper can provide different angles on the same story as well as feature player articles that can't be found elsewhere.

I pretty much read them all too. At the risk of souding like a kiss up, I think the Herald is the best.

As far as the "beat" writers go, I really have a hard time with Sullivan, but I like Kiley and Bruce. Like a lot of guys at the bigger papers, I think Sullivan spends more time trying to demostrate to his readers how smart and witty he is and less about the game on the field. I also think he is a little too slanted toward spouting the company line.

I read them all from time to time. However, I must say I have been disappointed with the Sun Times lately, because they have been caught putting headlines on their stories that distort what the articles actually say.

I'm sure this happens at other newspapers, too. But as of late, it has come to my attention regarding the Sun Times. I still intend to read the paper.

I have never had the chance to live in or near Chicago, but my grandfather gets the Chicago Tribune on occasion, and I really like their Cubs coverage.

Bruce and Rozner get my votes. Sullivan has not been much of a company man lately as far a I've noticed, though. Especially in his radio interviews. I'm surprised everytime I finish reading a Kiley article that he doesn't write for the Trib. He's the biggest Cubs apologist out there. For my money, the Southtown and the Daily Herald have the best, most unbiased stories.

A lot of the Tribune writers have a distaste for the company and aren't afraid to show it. I definitely don't read the columns (of any paper, really). I can think of better wastes of my time than reading about how much pressure there is on the Cubs because the White Sox won or other such nonsense.

I do look through Sullivan's articles for quotes and factual information, but that's about it. Of course, I only read it online, so Cubs.com is usually a more useful resource.

And I definitely read Bruce's articles. His are the only ones that I actually read through and not just skim.

I used to do some writing for the Herald and from what I saw, their office in Joliet is an absolute mess.

You'll rarely see a clean, orderly newspaper office. Most dailies I've seen are dumps.

The Trib & Sun Times still cover baseball? Huh, who knew

Recently I've just been going to chicagosports.com (ie the Tribe) since their website is well organized and easy to navigate. The columnists outside of Morrissey kinda suck (especially you know who), but that's not why I go there anyways.

If I want opiniated stuff, well, I come here.

Yeah. The Tirb has this guy named Phil Rogers who writes the most wonderfully constructed, and well-thought out opines on the web. You really should check him out sometime.

Yeah, I was talking about the people in the office too. I was constantly correcting them on grammar to make sure they didn't butcher my stories.

Yeah, I've driven past the building a few times, and on rotoworld they call it the "Arlington Height's Daily Herald."

They're HQ'd in Arlington Hts, but they have offices in several places. They have a branch here in Naperville, too.

We don't HAVE an office in Joliet. You might be referring to the Joliet Herald, a paper not affiliated with the the Daily Herald, whose offices are neat and clean (from what little I see of them).

I appreciate all the input. I will be definitelyl checking out all the other papers and websites mentioned. I enjoy reading the stories on the Cubs, but frankly, the best way to spend some time with the Cubs is with you all on this site. Thanks everyone.

I don't know; it was the Herald on Caterpillar. If it's not affilitated with the paper you guys are talking about, nevermind; but at the time I was writing stories for them, they were in dire need of staff replacement. I really don't care if the office of a newspaper is a mess or not, I've worked with enough to know to expect it. I was working with about four or five people, and one of them was very good all the way around, but others had trouble with grammar and spelling, finding things and getting stories in by deadline. When somebody writes a story and all you have to do is edit it, the result should never be that you tried to edit it, made incorrect changes and subsequently lost it. That happened to me TWICE. After that happened, I dedided to use their access a couple times for stories I wanted to do and then I cut ties. It was too much of a headache for me. I did get to go to Bulls media day, a Green Day concert and interview Kris Honel of the White Sox (whatever happened to that guy) before I left, haha. I guess I got payed back for the crap I put up with in the end.
