What two Americans should we get to carry the Olympic flag into the stadium?

Oh I know! Sophia Loren and Susan Sarandon!!!!

the important thing is I won an argument regarding the location of Howelsen Hill - featured in the Exxon ad with the Yampa Valley in the background.

There's only one international sporting event I'm interested in this year :D

US is looking impressive tonight without the internationals. Missed last weeks game, but happy with the style of play. Dempsey has been very impressive.

My wife and I actually spent the better part of this morning making fun of Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, and the rest of the dweebs on the Today show broadcasting from Italy this morning. Oh, and I really dislike the Olympics and the archaic concept of the games.

Dempsey has been awesome. I'm encouraged.

Going down the bobsled run at Lake Placid really made me appreciate what these guys go through. Man, that was pretty cool.

Pictures? :D

I wish we did have pictures! It cost a pretty penny and I did have to sign a bunch of waivers so you'd think they would have somebody take a picture at the end.

While in Gatlinburg last weekend, a friend rode a mechanical bull. I wish that I would've bought the video, it was hilarious!

The Norway game looked like they were playing a high school team. It was a joke.

The problem with the US roster is that I worry that Arena won't go with players like Dempsey and Twellman. I think that if he can find another left back, he'll use Lewis out wide, with O'Brien on the right, and McBride would probably have to break a leg before Arena would sit him.

I really like what Dempsey brings when he's on, and I think the US would do better to have Twellman than McBride at this stage of both players' careers. Twellmen doesn't cost you anything as far as 50/50 ball, and I think he's a more creative offensive player.

idea - start a US soccer thread and let this one be about the olympics.

I figured it might be too early, and it was only a couple posts.

I'll not hijack it further.

Even though I already knew the result (see Rants thread), Chad Hedrick is a speed skating monster. But what I really want to see is hockey, short track speedskating, and Alpine skiing.

what time was that on? I want to watch the speedskating but I have to scan through a lot of crap to find it.

The day they allowed pro athletes to compete in the Olympics was the day I stopped giving a crap.

Yeah, I always thought the USA did pretty good with amateurs whooping up on other countries pro's. So what if we didn't win the most medals? It's to be expected when amateurs are competing against pro's. But, vice versa, the countries who outmedaled us had no business bragging how superior they were than us.

But, did we really need to bring the professionals in to prove our superiority? Who freakin' cares? It's greedy and unnecessary and probably just one more added reason that other countries hate us.

And then, to listen to that idiot analyzing the China team in figure skating was an absolute joke. I hate ice dancing, can't stand watching it, but I did so out of respect for my wife's desire to watch it. I don't know who the guy was, but he sat there and just bashed the Chinese team that I thought was better than any other team that I saw by a long shot. Bash, bash, bash to the point you wonder if he has some sort of issue with people from China. The girl then completely disagrees with his analysis and says "sounds like the crowd disagrees with you", then the judges proceed to give them first place by a large margin.

If a guy can be much more clueless about skating than I, what in the world is he doing in the booth at the Olympics?

It couldn't have been Scott Hamilton because IMO he's one of the best out there.

I saw that last night; I don't recall whether it was Dick Buttons or the other male announcer (I forget who it was) who made those comments. The female analyst was Sandra Bezik (sp?).

I think the US Basketball team getting humilated two years ago was a sweet can of Karma coming back on us for the Dream Team and all that nonsense.

The last great US victory to me was the baseball win over Cuba. Guys like Ben Sheets and Jon Rauch won it when they were just minor leaguers.

I haven't read most of the thread so maybe someone has already said something like this, but:

Does anyone else feel that if the U.S. is not the clear winner in both gold medals and overall medals at the end of the olympics that it is pathetic. We have the best combination of wealth and population of any country in the Olmpics. By that alone they have the best odds. I hate to see top Americans of a sport to not get a medal. Its almost like shame. Is that a normal patriotic feeling or am I crazy?

Remember this is the Winter Games, historically we have not done as well in the Winter as the Summer Games.

But we really stepped it up in 2002. Not repeating that seems like failure.

It's simple fact that when the Games are in your home country you win more medals for a myriad of reasons. Most of the US's medal increase can be chalked up to that in 02.
