What did Shani do?

He was scheduled to participate in a combined event and backed out so he could put more attention on his individual event.

So, athletes are obligated to hurt their individual chances to try and win a team medal? Give the guy a break - all those whining about not winning that event should have performed better in their individual events.

Uh, if you're SCHEDULED then yeah, you're obligated.

Apolo loses to the two Koreans in short track. Too bad.

Yeah, he should never have scheduled it. It was a stupid thing to do, since he really doesn't care about that event anyway.

However, seeing Chad "Mr. Perfect" Hedrick upset? Hah. Doesn't bother me a bit. If ever there was a guy who needed a good arse-kicking, it's him.

The only guy making a point to talk about it was Hedrick, who BTW won the gold in the 5000m. He finished 6th in the 1000m, but wasn't the favorite in the event. In regards to the other guys in the team combined event, Boutiette was in the 5,000m and I don't see him scheduled in any other event, nor do I see Cox or Mull in another event. Parra is scheduled for the 1500 and Hedrick is in the 1500 and 10,000.

I'm certainly not a fan of the way Hedrick acted in the stands at the 1000m or the way he put emphasis on his pursuit of several medals.

I agree he shouldn't have agreed to race and backed out, but I think Davis should be celebrated for what he has accomplished. He is far from the first to back out of a team event an an olympics.

Shani Davis might be the worst interview ever. It was pretty clear that there were things on his mind other than the fact that he just won a freaking Olympic gold medal...

As for Hedrick's behavior, I think those two must just hate each other and make a point of taking a shot at the other whenever they can, i.e. Kobe/Shaq. I'm sure Hedrick's a good guy overall but when it comes to Shani he is just very sensitive, as can be seen in his quote "It annoys me because I've won a gold medal and here we are talking about him" (said before Shani won one of his own).

Yeah, it was a weird moment to say the least. Melissa Stark even asked if he was angry during the interview.

I don't think any of us can understand what could have been on his mind but that was a very awkward interview. of course, the interview questions throughout the olympics have been awful.

Anton what were you thinking when you watched the two koreans crossing the line ahead of you?

Seriously, wtf kind of question is that?

He's obviously hurt by the fact that none of his "teammates" are even happy for him. I mean, what an accomplishment! And for nobody to even be out there congratulating him. That's just cold.

Shame on all these fools. They should be happy to even be representing this country. Instead they're acting like a bunch of jerks.

I'm pretty sure Joey Cheek was congratulating him. If not, I'd be surprised, especially since Joey has been donating the money he's been winning.

I'd be concerned that the media is going to make this a big deal, especially with both of them racing in the 1500m.

USA needs some young scorers desperately. DiPietro has had a very good tourney, but they just can't score for him. Hopefully the young guns coming up like Kessel can replace Roenik, Hull, etc.

Once we're out I've gotta root for Sweden. Holmstrom, Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Lilja will represent the Wings well.

Damn, so close to a shot for Tkachuk but he was offsides.

From the tone I've seen here on the subject, I know this probably won't be popular, but I actually agree with most of what this guy says.

I agree Davis has been acting selfish. The trouble is though------Hedrick is being just as selfish. Think about it, just for a second. The only way Hedrick wins 5 GOLD medals is to take the 1,000 meter. The only way he wins the 1,000 meter is by tiring Davis out. The only way he tires Davis out is by getting him to skate more events.

Hedrick was never in the running for 5 Gold medals, unless Davis handed the 1,000 to him. So you're telling me Davis is selfish for not handing it to him? How about HEDRICK being selfish for wanting Davis to sacrifice his Olympic dream? Huh?

It's a 2 way street. Unfortunately, in typical American media fashion, only one side is being reported. Hedrick is just as much of a self-centered prick as Davis. So why is he being treated like a hero and Davis like trash? That's completely unfair. Anyone who is honest with themselves must concede that much.

not only that soul, but you can't pick up the story this week. this relationship has been ongoing. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Hedrick was not a very nice guy - he is known as the Paris Hilton of speedskating overseas. He may actually be racist. I think its highly unfair to judge Davis without knowing the whole story. The guy has had a pretty remarkable life. And when he should be celebrated the most, his country has turned on him. Not saying it is or isn't, but if I was in his shoes, this would all smack of racism.

racism? or because the guy seems like a horrible self-centered person who refused to compete in a team event that he had agreed to do? Give me a break, its not because of racism. I won't even go into the stupidity of the media in celebrating someone winning a medal b/c of their race...

The "Hedrick is trying to tire out Davis" conspiracy theory is entertaining, but if Hedrick actually thought he had a shot at a gold in 1,000m even with a tired Shani going, he was very much mistaken, because he finished 6th. This just seems like two people who are very bitter at one another, and probably for reasons that go beyond backing out of a team competition.

Read the article though. The guy is talking about Hedrick losing his "chance at history" because of Davis. Basically the *ENTIRE* media contingent was looking for Hedrick to win 5 Gold medals. And that's from the very beginning of the Olympics. That means they were looking for a Gold from Hedrick in the 1,000.

Now that we've seen both of them skate, it's just as ridiculous for Hedrick to be considered a favorite for the 1,000 as it was for Shani in the 5,000. So.......it brings back the original question. Why is Hedrick being treated like a King and Shani like dirt? I'm not saying racism, I'm just saying the media established a bias before even knowing all the facts, and now they seem unwilling to admit there's plenty of blame to go around. That's all.

He had a chance to help his teammate, Chad Hedrick, chase history. He had a chance to embrace the Olympic spirit and put the team ahead of himself.

How ridiculous is it to expect Davis to give up the 1,000 just so Hedrick can win 5 gold medals? Hedrick isn't even capable of making the damn podium in the 1,000! Ludicrous!

Eric Heiden *EARNED* his 5 gold medals. Hedrick isn't even in the same league. Hedrick wasn't chasing history. The media was chasing fantasies. Now Davis must pay? Why? This is so stupid.
