There may be some backlash about Mark Prior's name surfacing in the Miguel Tejada trade talks.

USA Today Sports Weekly reported Prior is "peeved that (the Cubs) were willing to trade him to Baltimore."

Much ado about nothing, or potentially real trouble? I don't like the timing with contract negotiations coming on.

Mark Prior may not be one of "these kinds of guys" but in general I'm getting pretty tired of players getting angry, hurt, demoralized etc... when management considers their names in trade talks and yet when free agency comes up, they're the first ones standing in line ready to sign whoever gives them the biggest offer.

Two worrisome things:

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said he has not yet talked with Prior about the matter.

I would think talking to him might just be a good idea.

On arbitration possibilities for Z/Prior:

"We haven't gotten into it in depth with those players. The filing date is (Jan. 17). Our attitude is that there are comparable players to align a certain guy with unless a representative sees it totally different than we do."

Hmmm...wonder if Jim will use the last 2 years only when comparing Prior, and career when comparing Z. (Yes, I'm obliquely referring to his Jacque Jones comments.) And W-L will almost undoubtedly be the main measure used.

I can't blame Prior for hating the organization and wanting out as soon as he is an FA, which has been rumored. He's been woefully mishandled and unfairly labeled as "injury-prone" his entire career.

Is this true, honestly...where have you read this?

Hendry and MacPhail have structured this team around the starting pitchers. If one wants to beileve Miles and others they are willing to move Walker because the pitchers groused about his defense. If these two facts are true, then they will do whatever it takes to make Prior and Zambrono both happy and rich(er).

Prior has to understand that baseball is a business and that he is a valuable comidity. If not, then I question the education system in Southern California, no offense Raisen.

I saw this coming. This organization sure seem to make a lot of players mad, even though "everyone wants to play for Dusty".

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

There were rumors posted by someone here, JeffH I believe. Even he said to take it with a grain of salt, but Prior being upset with the trade talks would be consistent with that. Take it FWIW I guess.

Last time I looked, 48th out of 50 states. But, it might be 49th.

BigbadB went to school in Illinois. :D

What state were you educated in?

spelling is not my strong suit. It is damned embarassing. And yes I blame my teachers.

Somehow I doubt that Raisin will be too upset about questioning the education to be had at USC.

If I were him I'd run like hell away from this sorry franchise and never look back.

Hendry NEEDS to have a one-on-one sitdown with him and smooth things over. Now.

Agreed. Although he does technically have three years to smooth things out? Man this franchise just keeps going down and down. It's really sad to see.

And they were in an incredible position coming out of 2003. They had the opportunity to be good for a long time.

I doubt it. Prior's too professional for that.

On one hand, being professional is a good thing. You love a guy that ignores the media fray, etc. But on the other hand, he might go about his business and when free agency hits, bolt.

It's a reality Cards fans face with Mulder, albeit a lesser talent, he strikes me as a professional salivating for free agency.

I'm probably the only one who thinks this is pure crap.

Sports Weekly has a long history of reporting "hot news" in their Buzz column(or whatever they call it, their 10 word blurbs) and almost always, has zero merit to it.

Iirc 41st out of 50. The deep south fills out the bottom half. A lot of kids in CA don't speak English as their first language. :)

The state has a great higher ed system tho.

I really don't think the cubs organization had anything to do with him being labelled injury prone at all. How can you possibly lay that blame on them?

The great Hendry at his best what can I tell ya.

Dude seriously, is there anything that isn't Hendry's fault? Global Warming? Healthcare Costs?

Hendry has every right to look into deals for any players to make the team better. He shouldn't need to coddle players, and as much as I love Prior (2nd favorite player on the Cubs) he shouldn't be in a tizzy because his name was perhaps mentioned to see what it could get.

I think you should join ndistops bandwagon, because I doubt your attitude will ever change short of a WS championship.
