On the 6:30 pm update on the Score(I know its the score), they claimed that their sources with the Cubs say that the Cubs have not talked to the Orioles in several days about a trade for Tejeda...however, they do remain very interested in acquiring the SS. Wierd..

I sure hope this is accurate.

As do I, but the Cubs often deny that they're in trade talks. They denied the Sosa trade pretty much up until it was official.

Didn't see this mentioned yet, but FOXsports.com is reporting the Cubs, O's, and A's are working on a three way deal that would net the O's Zito and Prior, Cubs would get Bedard and Tejeda and the A's would get a ton of prospects (presumably Hill, Patterson, and O's prospects). That trade would be utterly ridiculous from the Cubs standpoint. I'm starting to think Hendry might not have a clue what he is doing anymore.

FoxSports is not very reliable, and we are talking about a business that is very unreliable as a whole. I really doubt that FoxSports has the specifics of any trade proposal that might exist at this point.

Did you read the article? It was from a Baltimore Sun sports writer and quoted an O's front office member. Sure Foxsports may not be reliable, but this is starting to sound like a complete mess from the Cubs standpoint.

Where did it quote anyone from any official position? All I saw was "industry source." In the hands of many sports writers, that can can mean a lot of things.

It's the exact same article in the Baltimoresun from this morning. I panicked for a second too.

Oh, good. :)

Do agree, however I think the Sosa situation was much different than Prior.

I still scratch my head with moving Prior, sure it excites me to think we could have a 3,4,5 of Lee, Aram, Miggy. But at the expense of Prior...man I don't know.

Let's say the Cubs made it to the playoffs:

Would you rather throw Prior out there in a pivotal game, or have an extra hitter with a career .815 OPS in there?

It's not even close. As a Cardinals fan, I'm hoping and prior a Prior/Tejada trade goes down... and it really has nothing to do with bias.

I posted this yesterday, but giving it more thought, kind of seems to make sense to me:

Mark Prior, Matt Murton, and Corey Patterson to the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez (Cubs assume entire salary), Jonathan Papelbon, and Jon Lester.

Red Sox would do it because they get arguably the best young pitcher in baseball and also rid themselves of the Manny Ramirez headache (and salary).

Cubs would do it because they get one of the game's best hitters and two great young ML ready pitchers who are eons away from Free Agency.

Posted

I look at it this way: The two teams that were in the World Series this year had sub par offenses. Their pitching was amazing. Give me Prior any day of the week.

I'd rather win a game 2-1 than lose a game 6-5.

Now that would make sense... at least more than the Tejada deal. Manny Ramirez is an elite htiter. Miguel Tejada is an above-average hitter.

Still, though... trade Prior, and Zambrano is really the only thing you can count on in that rotation. It's just not a good move for the Cubs...

Still get a laugh out of Jack Haley's Boozer for Odom deal from last year. Fox is pretty unreliable.

And then the Cubs would have two pitchers in a span of 2 years with names pronounced John LESTER

I wonder how Prior reacts to the rumors if he does end up staying put. Its hard to believe he'd take it really well.

I've been thinking about this as well. There's always speculation that Prior will leave as Free Agent after the 2008 season and I can't imagine hearing his name floating around in trade rumors will help convince him to stay. Hopefully he handles it like a professional like everything he always has.

It is something every athlete has to hear. I imagine they are coached to deal with this type of stuff during player development.

I'm sure he's not happy about it (If he indeed wants to stay a Cub), but Prior seems intelligent enough to realize that it's out of his hands. All he can do is hope for the best.

I don't get it. Hendry screws up and doesn't get a competent SS even though there were a few on the market in Nomar, Furcal and Renteria. Now, he's possibly willing to trade one of the team's best starting pitchers to fill the void? What the hell is the point? Wouldn't it have been better to have a wildly-overpaid Furcal and Mark Prior than to have Miguel Tejada and no Mark Prior? It's a disgrace that a GM with a $100M+ payroll and plenty of money to burn has now boxed himself into a position where the only way to significantly improve the offense is to weaken the pitching staff. But, I'm not going to bother getting angry about it because these imcompetent boobs will do whatever they want to drive the franchise straight into the ground.

Ken Rosenthal has broken just about every transaction this offseason and puts out about 6 articles a day about it. He is very very good on baseball.

It's been touched on a bit by others, but I have to reiterate what little sense this move makes with regards to the way Hendry's ran the rest of the offseason about pitching and defense and copying the flawed model from the other side of town.

Allright, i've been gone all day so I have no clue where things stand. Is there anything important happening as far as the tejada thing goes....

I posted a Sports Illustrated article earlier today that essentially said that. They got their info from the Baltimore Sun.

Im not sure if this was already poseted and if it has been i appologize..

If, as the Baltimore Sun reports, the Birds aren't interested in Prior, the Red Sox might be...This has all the makings of a terrific round of musical chairs. The Orioles, aware and wary of the trade wishes expressed by Tejada earlier this month, are listening to the Cubs but, reports the Sun, would prefer obtaining workhorse Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs, conversely, are asking for lefty Erik Bedard to be included in any deal and aren't interested in parting with another of the Orioles' requests -- prime outfield prospect Felix Pie.

this thing has gathered so much steam that it seems like there has to be some truth in it. sickening. our best hope is that hendry's asinine 'pitching, defense and speed' kick will prevent him from making this deal. trading prior for tejada doesn't help in any of those categories.

my favorite part is that it appears as though prior alone isn't enough to get tejada. on sportscenter buster olney said that the o's were looking for a #1 pitcher PLUS a solid position player. he said the cubs may need to get another team involved to get that position player. tejada's catching up w/ damon in the most overrated guy to change teams this offseason contest.

The link you had

What the???

Hendry:

I will not trade Prior. OK, maybe I'll ... oh what the hell, let's get rid of him.

Angelos:

No Miggy without Mark. Um, how 'bout Prior and Hill? I don't want Prior.

The only way the Orioles walk out of that deal with BOTH Prior and Zito, is if they give up a combination of Nick Markakis/Hayden Penn/Adam Loewen/Val Majewski/Jeff Fiorentino AND Tejada and Bedard. For the Orioles, it will come down to getting Zito OR Prior, but not both. And it will be taboo if the Orioles even mentions C. Zambrano.
