I like the deal. Low-risk (cheap, heavily incentive-laden contract), high-reward (if he returns to his form of a few years ago) situation. What's not to like? Yeah, he's been horrific the last couple years... but fortunately, the way the contract works, we pay him for how well he produces.

Clearly the team saw something in him if they went out and signed him. I know we tried to trade for him back during his "good" season, but he ended up going to San Francisco, instead. I think he'll be at least decent. Nice to get some insurance.

Brian Daubach (signed) and Felix Rodriguez (potential Card) are other names of interest.

Thoughts? Again, low-risk, high-reward. Type of deals teams with limited budgets (yes, we spend more than most, but so much is locked into the core) make.

This means the "highly anticipation arrival of the king of the new Cardinal throne" Anthony Reyes won't be starting the season in St. Louis, not to mention....it gives the rest of the NL Central,a NEW Matt Morris to pound on.

Really? Here I am thinking Marquis is now on his way out and he's gonna take Jason's spot in the rotation..

Sidney Ponson - S - Orioles

The Cardinals are set to announce the signing of Sidney Ponson to a one-year deal.

More good news for Astros, Cubs and Brewers fans if the Cardinals put Ponson into the rotation and send Anthony Reyes back to the minors. Sure Ponson is the type of pitcher Dave Duncan tends to have success with, but he's not outperforming Reyes.

Tuesday's agreement occurred barely 24 hours after Ponson's release from a Baltimore jail

Need more be said? The guy has always been awful off the field and, at best, is high-end mediocrity on the field.

Ponson probably won't even make it out of spring training. The only way I like this deal is if it allows us to trade for an impact corner outfielder. Otherwise Ponson is a fat alcoholic waste of space and I would much rather see Reyes get his chance.

I actually like this signing. Ponson has quit drinking and has lost weight. Look for a pretty good year out of him. I was hoping the Cubs would take a flier on him.

Reyes will be in the rotation. One of two things will happen. Ponson will bomb in spring training (very likely), or Ponson will be good in spring training, and Marquis will be traded for outfield help.

If Marquis is traded I'd imagine it's well before ST. I don't see many teams entering ST with both a gaping hole in their rotation and an extra starting OF lying around.

Watch out Anheiser Busch, your stocks are sure to climb with Ponson in StL!

Quit drinking??? I thought I read somewhere that he recently got busted again.

Odd how they pick up a potential 5th starter to possibly trade Marquis for an OF'er immediately after their primary OF target unfort. (for both teams involved) signs w/another team.

You forgot option three- Ponson will be arrested in Spring Training.

Here's hoping Ponson has a great ST, and the usually astute Cardinals are dumb enough to take his 30ish inning sample as proof he should start. Over/Under on Ponson's ERA next year? About 5.50?

God forbid a team buys low on young player in a low risk move.

Dude, we just signed jones. we have no room to talk.... :P

Ponson will be as bad in the Cardinals rotation as Jones will be in the Cubs line-up.

Looks like the teams are matching bad move for bad move.

Only difference being Jones is locked in for 3/16 while Ponson is making the minimum for 1 year. A lot easier to cut bait.
