Trib[/url]"]Not only are the Cubs trying to accommodate their neighbors, they have removed a metal gate from the wall and are leaving an open space in the right-field corner that offers passersby on Sheffield Avenue a free, ground-level view of the action.

The Cubs are calling it a "knothole," conjuring up a Rockwellian image of an old wooden outfield fence where youngsters peered through a hole in the wall.

Actually, it's a rectangular space about 20 feet long where a couple of dozen people can gather to watch the game behind a wire-mesh fence. The San Francisco Giants offer a similar view of games at SBC Park from a vantage point behind the right-field grandstand.

And some bleacher news:

That means fans who once stood near the back fence and mingled during the game won't have room to do so, unless they want to mingle in an area with no view of the playing field. The new seats will go all the way to the back fence.

"They aren't selling standing-room tickets, so there will be no more standing in the bleachers," Johnson said. "There goes the Champs Elysees of Wrigley Field."

Guess that means the bleachers will be largely non-smoking.

They have been largely non-smoking. The standing people up on the walkway weren't allowed to smoke, they had to go down onto the ramps.

I'm not in there often, but while the ushers usually tell people in the seats to stop smoking in a timely manner, it's been my impression that the people standing in the back go largely unnoticed.

Hmmm. I've got a couple of buddies I sit in the bleachers with several times a season, and they always bitch that they have to go down on the ramp where they can't see the game in order to smoke.

If they can't go a few hours without a smoke that's their problem.

I cant imagine a game in the RF standing room at big games, especially playoff games.

The "Champs Elysees of Wrigley Field" is a stretch, but I really don't like that they're doing away with the view of the field from the back walkway. It has nothing to do with smoking (I don't). I think it will really change the atmosphere there when you emerge into a walkway without a view of the field (or much of a view below, depending on how the overhang works in LF) and the foot traffic is really going to bottleneck when you do actually get to the bleachers and get to choose between climbing up to your seat or walking down.

I have very low expectations of the bleacher expansion project and doubt it will even meet those minimal standards.

I think someone in the Cubs brass misinterpreted "We have a hole in RF".
