From ESPN chat w/ Baseball America 12/4:

Nick (Lockport, IL): If Tejada could be had in a trade do think the Cubs should trade Pie to get him or his upside too much to part with him?

John Manuel: Are you serious? This wouldn't be Larry Andersen for Bagwell here. I have some doubts about Pie's "hittability," his ability to hit for average, due to his plate discipline issues. If you can get Tejada and you don't give up major leaguers to get him, you do it. Of course, now Tejada says he doesn't want to leave Baltimore . . . right.

The latest from Boston on the story that just won't go away.

Tejada still in sights -- Sox balk at dealing pitcher with Ramirez

By Michael Silverman/ Red Sox Notebook

The Red Sox, White Sox and Cubs are believed to be the most persistent suitors of disgruntled Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, according to a source close to Tejada yesterday, but other teams have been calling as well.

Tejada wants to be traded to a “winning team,” said the source, and the Red Sox continue to be atop, or near the top, of Tejada’s wish list. In recent days, Tejada has seemed to back away from last week’s statements requesting a change of scenery.

Much like the Red Sox had to initially keep silent or deny Manny Ramirez’ privately expressed desire to be traded, the Orioles have made every effort to have Tejada realize that he does himself and the Orioles no favors in trade discussions with other teams by repeating his disgruntled sentiments.

The Red Sox probably remain a longshot to snare Tejada with a trade offer of Ramirez. The Orioles want at least another pitcher in addition to Ramirez, and the Baltimore Sun reported that the Red Sox balked at giving up a hurler as well as a pitching prospect.

It sounds like Baltimore is doing what a lot of home owners here do when then are thinking of selling a house, put it on the market for way more than it is worth and see if anybody bites.

Well, the housing market bubble is bursting with every 1/4 point uptick Greenspan makes.

I expect the Tejada market bubble to burst soon too.

Nobodody, and I mean nobody is going to give them an All-Star position player and a top pitchers.

Does this remind anyone of the Sammy Sosa saga from last year?

I think Tejada will be dealt, but it probably won't be until late January or early Febuary unless either Baltimore or the trading partner gets nervous.

Disgruntled player that everyone knew wanted to be gone and the team trying to get the most out of the trade while at the same time trying not to seem desperate to get rid of him

How about A-Rod?

It is not hard to see, but whatever.

A-Rod's a closer comparison than Sosa, but A~Rod was making twice as much. I can't think of a close comparison at the moment.

The Score just had the White Sox beat reporter for the Herald (didn't catch his name) on with Murphy. He said there's no way the White Sox could afford to bring on Tejada's contract. They are already over $90 million and the budget is for $90 milion so they're going to have to cut some salary (Garland most likely to be traded). He said there's no way the White Sox could afford Tejada's $11 million with all the money they already have on the books.

The differences with Sosa were: A) everybody knew that regardless of what Hendry said in public, there was no way he was going to be with the team in 2005. I don't think the O's feel they have to trade him this offseason. and B) He was making a ton of money, due for another boatload if traded, and his production was declining at a very alarming rate.

Scott Gregor (Bruce's counterpart for the Sox) said they need to trade Garland (to get down from $95 to $90 million) for prospects with minimal contracts.

OK here's what the Cubs do. Keep in mind the Orioles want an established pitcher(s) and not prospects.

Trade prospects to the Sox for Garland and then package Garland with Williams and Cedeno for Tejada.

The Sox unload Garland, Orioles unload Tejada and get some established pitchers, the Cubs get Tejada. Everbody's happy.

Sure it probably won't happen but it does make sense.

You know, that sounds like a great deal for all teams involved considering their goals. However, I could see the Sox refusing to give us Garland specifically because they know we'd probably flip him for Tejada. They can get just as good prospects from another team without helping their in-city rivals in getting another big star. Plus, our getting Tejada would steal their offseason thunder.

Since we gave them Garland in the first place for practically nothing, I would think the least they could do is give him back for some decent prospects.

Is Oakland still looking to unload Zito?

Cubs get: Tejada, Kotsay

Athletics get: Williams, Guzman/Dopirak, Sing, Patterson

Orioles get: Zito, Hill, and Cedeno

A's Perspective: They unload 14 mil in contracts, and get a starter that is ready now with potential in Williams, A high prospect in Guzman/Dopirak, a future DH in Sing, and a ready OF with a small contract that could produce in a new scenery.

Orioles Perspective: They Unload Tejada while getting exactly what they want in return, a top of the rotation starter, another MLB Ready Starter prospect, and a SS to replace Tejada that can produce.

Cubs Perspective: The Cubs use alot of their 2006 Payroll to fill their final two big holes on the team (Kotsay 7M, Tejada 12 Mil). The Payroll right now looks like this:

Pitchers

--------------

Greg Maddux (9M)

Kerry Wood (11M) (Not On Opening Day Roster)

Ryan Dempster (5M)

Carlos Zambrano (5.5M)

Bob Howry (2.5M)

Scott Eyre (2.7M)

Mark Prior (2M)

Glendon Rusch (2.75)

Michael Wuertz (500k)

Robert Novoa (400k)

--------------

Infielders

--------------

Michael Barrett (4M)

Derrek Lee (9.2M)

Todd Walker (2.5M)

Miguel Tejada (12M)

Aramis Ramirez (10.5M)

Neifi Perez (2.5M)

Hendry Blanco (1.5M)

--------------

Outfielders

--------------

Juan Pierre (4M)

Mark Kotsay (7.0M)

Jerry Hairston Jr. (1.5M)

John Mabry (1M)

Matt Murton (300k)

--------------

Buyouts

--------------

Jeromy Burnitz (Buyout) (0.5 M)

---------------------

Opening Day Roster Total (21 Players) = 96 M

Our Lineup would look set at:

CF Pierre

RF Kotsay

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

SS Tejada

2B Walker

LF Murton

C Barrett

5 Holes left at SP (2), Backup IF, and a Reliever

We can plug Theroit at backup IF (300k)

We can put Ohman as our LOOGY (400k)

for our last 2 SP spots, I think we have to trade for/sign another SP, and then plug Rusch at SP5 until Wood comes back, and call up someone like Van Buren or Koronka to hold Rusch's spot in the pen.

The Pen would look like:

Koronka

Ohman

Wuertz

Novoa

Howry

Eyre

Dempster

with about 8-10 M to spend on acquiring one SP, and maybe one RP/SP for depth. Hopefully we can still snatch up Kevin Millwood by the time these transactions go through, or Washburn.

Oakland does not get nearly enough in this exchange.

why is oakland trying to dump players/salary? they're closer to contending than the cubs are.

Kotsay has an extension so he's not going anywhere, but Zito is due a big payday after next season and Oakland still doesn't have a big enough payroll to handle that.

Posted
oh, i did not realize that he had signed on for 2 more years, well in that case, just take off Kotsay and Patterson off of the deal, and put into the additional moves to sign/trade for a suitable RF (Wilkerson, Finley), and the payroll would even out.

Fred Mitchell[/url]"]More than one source has claimed the Cubs dangled pitcher Mark Prior in multiteam trade talks that would land them premier Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada and eventually send Prior to a team in the American League West. Hmmm …

Guh? I sure would love to hear what Hendry thinks is a good trade that involves Prior.

The one that brings us Bonds, Guerrero and Tejada I guess?

Well. He thinks J. Jones is a good FA signing, so who knows at this point. I don't even want to think about this happening. I'm going to act like I never read your post.

To get a player like Tejada you gotta give up someone that hurts... losing Prior hurts.

Seriously. It's like a Nazareth or REM song playing over and over again. Prior is awesome, and, when given a full season, has shown he is unbelievable. The Cubs should do all they can to keep him and Z.
