According to the guys at http://www.thehotstovereport.com, the Cubs are getting in the Vazquez line, and they expect Bradley to be a Cub in a few days, but the most interesting thing is that NO ONE wants Patterson.

Okay, so if we're stuck with him, and, I can think of far worse scenarios (Curtis Goodwin), what are our options (literally)? Can we shove him back to AAA without exposing him? Should we just keep him on the bench and let him spell Pierre every once in a while?

patterson would be exposed to waivers before being able to go to AAA again.

Where he would be picked up by St. Louis and turn into Willie Mays.

I'd have no problem with him on the bench. Give me 2 more corner OF and have Murton/Patterson as 4th/5th OF

Sounds good to me too. I think the Cubs would have to deal Hairston then though. I wonder how much interest their is out there for Hairston? Texas or LA maybe?

I'd rather hang onto patterson. A scenario where you keep him but don't have to depend on him is ideal. Outfield of Murton, Pierre, Floyd/Bradley/whomever with Patterson and Hairston on the bench is not too bad.

Expensive bench player, but he still has tons of potential.

What a waste though when you think of it. Corey would have little to no opportunity to try to salvage his career, meanwhile we'd have a bench player who I'd hate to see come up in clutch situations against good relief pitchers because he swings at everything.

I understand the thought process because you don't want to lose him and get nothing at all in return, but it seems like it wouldn't be a good fit for him or for the Cubs.

I'm sure Hendry is not giving up on trading him. I'd still pitch Patterson to Seattle, Anaheim, Baltimore and the Yankees - all need help in CF, and may be willing to take a chance on a change in scenery fueling his growth. One of those teams could sign Damon, if Boston doesn't.

Maybe trading Cedeno and Patterson to the Red Sox for who?

Patterson and Neifi for Trot Nixon.

Surely Patterson is easier to trade than Todd Hundley was... :P

Call Ned Coletti, let's offer Patterson for Choi and Izturis.

This would be IDEAL, instead of losing Walker (ignoring the part about Jones)... (from MLB.COM)

The Cubs are also still looking at free agent Jacque Jones and Milton Bradley of the Dodgers, with Corey Patterson expected to be the player involved in any deal for Bradley. ...

Corey's pretty athletic and has a good glove. I wonder if he could work on learning the MIF positions in spring training, and back up 2B and SS. I would think that if he could do that without looking completely lost by the end of ST, that would greatly increase his trade value.

Corey's never struck me as the most "fluid" of athletes, if that makes any sense. I don't think that would work at all.

If we can't trade him, I would think it would be worth trying out in ST though. If he can't do it, then we've lost nothing.

If we can't trade Patterson, we'll have to decide if he's worth the 3 million arbitration risk to have on the bench by December 20th. With the extra money we have this year, unless we've made a big trade between now and then that eats up a significant portion of the 16-18 million we will still have left, I'd keep him on the bench. Corey is athletic enough to play all three outfield spots and if nothing else makes a decent pinch runner.

On the other hand, if he isn't traded, I fully expect him to be non-tendered. My guess is if Corey isn't moved before then, we'll send him somewhere at the non-tender deadline for a marginal prospect.

Given that we always seem to have an outfielder go down with injury for a long duration at some point in the year, Patterson would be a decent insurance policy for all three outfield positions.

The only question I have back with that: Would Patterson be able and willing to not be a starter and be a bench player considering he's started every year he's been in Chicago, IIRC?

As a 5th outfielder, yes. As a 4th outfielder, no.

I was kind of liking the concept of adding Floyd and Bradley via trade, then Murton (platoon with Floyd), Hairston and Patterson (PH/utility) fill out the rest of the outfield.

That's an offense that I would applaud Hendry's offseason. Assuming of course Cedeno and Walker are the middle infield.

What good does he do you on the bench? He won't get any better there so he is worthless pinch-hitting. His defense is mediocre. He's essentially Tom Goodwin, whom was worthless. Put him through waivers.

He doesn't have any choice on the issue. Unless he's non-tendered, he's the property of the Cubs.
