What team is going to be dumb enough to trade for Patterson now, knowing they'll have to pay him $2.5MM minimum? They'll just wait until the Cubs non-tender him in 2 weeks, and then pursue him if he's someone they want to take a flyer on, as a free agent at (likely) less than a million per year.

Patterson has no value right now, that's why the Cubs can't move him. I guess I don't understand why anyone wouldn't be jumping out of their seats to trade for a $3MM ballplayer that posts a .250 OBP. What are those dummies thinking??!!

Non-tender, please.

jehrico, Doesnt corey throw LH. I should look it up to make sure but I am pretty sure he does. It would be almost a complete waste of time to teach him 2nd and SS is he does throw LH

edit: I knew I should have looked it up. He does throw RH sorry for the mistake

He throws right handed NUN.

The only question I have back with that: Would Patterson be able and willing to not be a starter and be a bench player considering he's started every year he's been in Chicago, IIRC?

He doesn't have any choice on the issue. Unless he's non-tendered, he's the property of the Cubs.

Any chance he would become a distraction though?

wow I'm a NUN, I better change. I looked it up right after I posted because I couldnt believe that I would have been the only one smart enough to catch it. It turns out I was the only one dumb enough to think it

Always a chance of that, but nothing the organization can do about it if nobody wants to trade for him. I feel badly for the kid, I really do - he showed so much potential before that injury he had but since then he's reverted to the point where I swear he's less disciplined now than he was when he came up - and it seems to have affected his CF defense a bit as well.

It's totally a catch 22 - his value won't rise unless he's given a chance to succeed - he won't get a chance to succeed unless he gets better - he can't go down to the minors again. There really are very few options left.

There's a small part of me that has to wonder how all of this affects his younger brother who's in the Cubs system as well. Put yourself in his shoes and you gotta believe he won't hold alot of love for the Cub organization if they just give up on his older brother.

I really had hoped that after the Jerome Walton and Ty Griffin expectations we had for CF that Corey was the real thing. If he is, I'm afraid it'll have to show on another teams ML roster.

Wasn't Ty Griffin a third baseman ?

Second basemen, I thought. He was gonna be the guy to replace Ryno.

If we can't trade Patterson, we'll have to decide if he's worth the 3 million arbitration risk to have on the bench by December 20th. With the extra money we have this year, unless we've made a big trade between now and then that eats up a significant portion of the 16-18 million we will still have left, I'd keep him on the bench. Corey is athletic enough to play all three outfield spots and if nothing else makes a decent pinch runner.

On the other hand, if he isn't traded, I fully expect him to be non-tendered. My guess is if Corey isn't moved before then, we'll send him somewhere at the non-tender deadline for a marginal prospect.

What are the odds of him actually winning the arbitration case and getting a raise? I would guess extremely slim to none. I'm not exactly sure what his contract was last year (2.5?) but I'd be willing to wager that his salary next year would be less than what it was in 2005.

I'd like to keep him around. As crappy as he was last year (he was pretty freakin pathetic) he still has a relatively good chance at turning his career around and actually being a decent player. If nothing else, he's very valuable off the bench to replace Pierre for defense. Though I can't see it happening often with Dusty at the helms, Corey would be a very good late inning defensive replacement.

You're right he was, but I thought they decided to screw with him and move him out to CF because Ryno wasn't going anywhere for awhile and they thought Griffin could come up sooner. It was a total flop if I recall
