Just curious on people's opinions of the two. Who would you rather the Cubs acquire?

FURCAL.

1) He's better.

2) Why give up prospects for a player five years older that you would probably have to give Fucal-like money in a year to keep? Doesn't make sense.

Lugo is only two years older than Furcal...not five.

when faced to choose between a wife beater or a drunk, then I'll take the drunk anyday.

so i guess bradley is out then. i wonder what kind of drinker pierre is?

I would rather have Furcal. I think at this point getting Furcal is a must. When I hear stories that the Cubs are comfortable having Neifi and Cedeno share time at SS if Fircal doesn't sign I cringe.

Lugo without question. He's better and much cheaper.

How exactly is Lugo better? Aside from last year in the OBP department, Furcal has been better in nearly every category throughout their careers.

Lugo's 3-year splits: .281 .346 .402 .748

Furcal's splits: .285 .348 .429 .777

Close, but Furcal steals more bases and has a higher success rate. Furcal is also a better defender and it two years younger. Lugo historically strikes out more and walks less. Furcal hits for more power and is faster.

Furcal will cost more, but will require no trade cost.

You can say Lugo is more cost effective, but to say he is better is just plain wrong.

I agree. But I'd go with Lugo because of the cost. I'm not sure about Furcal being better on defense either. But I would have to check the stats.

Wasn't Furcal one of the guys that had their true age found out a few years ago? So at one point, he might have been five years younger than Lugo on paper.

I'd take Furcal over Lugo in a heartbeat. Slightly better at the plate, better on the basepaths, better defensively, WAY better arm (probably the best in baseball)...

Rafael Furcal, born October 24, 1977, was first believed to have been born in 1979. Thus, during his major league rookie season, his 40 stolen bases were considered the most ever by a teenaged player, breaking the record set in 1906 by Ty Cobb. When it was discovered that Furcal had been a 21-year-old rookie, Cobb reclaimed his 84-year-old record.

Furcal is better. It looks like Lugo is the Braves second choice is Furcal leaves.

The Braves and Rays discussed Julio Lugo again on Tuesday, a source told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

If Rafael Furcal leaves, the Braves would like another top-of-the-order threat to replace him at shortstop. The Rays could be interested in some combination of Johnny Estrada, Wilson Betemit and young pitching.
