Just another side note, this website has given away free passes before. It's not some hook-and-lure thing. You guys are paranoid! Like I said, I honestly believe this rumor isn't a rumor and is something that was told by a reputable source. That doesn't mean its going to happen, but you should at the minimum be thrilled that your Cubs are making a concentrated effort to get some talent into Wrigley. Cross your fingers!

I'm all for this move, but not at this cost for either player. That being said, I doubt it'll happen. It has to be bogus.

P.S. - Since Furcal would be one of the first FA signings, can you imagine how much money Boras would then want for Damon? Or how much Giles could command? Talk about screwing not only yourselves, but all of MLB.

Exactly. The FA market has not shown to be a bell curve, more like the foot of a cliff. Don't you think Eyre and Howry would be demanding more money if we hadn't signed them before Ryan's insane deal? Maybe Hendry realizes he needs to overwhelm Furcal with a deal NOW. Hendry's not an idiot, and we have money.

Yes, but we are not the Yankees.

Bruce Levine discounted the Furcal for $100M 'rumor', but said the trade with Texas is something "the Cubs would do" and would be a "positive" move, with the exception of Soriano's defensive liability.

Levine is on ESPN1000AM right now co-hosting a show called Baseball 365.

100 plus incentives. Like I said if he wins the NL Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, is the World Series MVP, the NL MVP, and has 500 PA, every year, for 6 years, that's a ton of bonus money.

If they did consummate a trade for Mench and Soriano (I'd still rather have Walker in LF and Cedeno at 2B than those two), I wonder if that would preclude them from wrapping up a deal for Pierre.

Just out of curiosity, but why do you sometimes refer to the Cubs as "ours" and "we", then in other posts refer to them as "your" Cubs?

I like to think all Cub fans are part of a family. A bitter and cynical one, but family nonetheless. Are you implying I'm a Cardinals fan incognito?

the Beijing Cardinals? If so, Tim should be censured for slandering you.

No, the Trib has money, and I guarantee that FitSimons wouldn't sign off on a ludicrous deal like that. Especially if you consider the fact that there are rumors of the Trub possibly putting the Cubs up on the market, there's no way they'd allow any $100 million deals for anyone that is not on the Vlad/Rodriguez level, as any bad long term contracts the team is saddled with would certainly have a negative effect on the market value on the team.

I think you meant 100 including incentives. If it was plus, it would be $100M+, which is even more insane. Levine said, even if he never reached incentives, it'd be 5/65 or so... and that's not going to happen either. He said both the Braves and Cubs were leaning in the direction of a 4-year deal for Furcal.

I wasn't implying anything. I was merely asking a question about a curious inconsistency in your writing. I actually thought the most likely explanation was that you are located in China and english pronouns can be difficult. However, you seem otherwise very fluent and so it seemed curious.

I guess you being a cards fan would be another explanation, now that you mention it...

I've visited the baseball team on campus here (http://www.tsinghua.edu.cn) and let's just say, China has a long ways to go before they start producing major leaguers though. I'm getting off topic, so I'll just say this - look for an all-chinese nba in 5 years. It's all they do, 24/7, play hoops.

Back to Furcal - I'd like to also go on note that I'm not advocating signing Furcal. I'm scared off from the first half of 05 and from his drinking. I still don't understand why we just don't sign Giles. All this is too complicated. Hard to be upset with Furcal, just seems unnecessary.

I can see the deal happening, but not for the dollars discussed for Soriano or Furcal. Soriano is first and foremost an offensive player, but I think you could live with his D as being flanked by Furcal and Lee could cover up a lot of evils.

I had thought we'd deal for Soriano, but keep Cedeno at SS if we got someone like Pierre to lead off. Then get the big bat in right and go with.

Pierre, Murton, Lee, RF(Abreau?), Aram, Soriano, Barrett, Cedeno.

It's more that I never speak English here, ever. Rusty.

What a load of BS! Seriously, what's the point of posting such garbage? I don't understand the mentality that calls for posting erroneous rumors, is it to see how many replies it generates?

Even if none of the transactions here turn out to happen, I hardly find it a "stretch". All the players mentioned have also been mentioned in other more respected publications.

The article doesn't make much sense. $100 million? That's insane. Also, it looks like ITI is doing a free preview weekend trying to get more people to buy their membership by giving out juicy information that can only be found on their site (don't see Furcal almost a Cub on any other site). ITI is usually pretty good about their information, but this one leaves me puzzled.

For what it's worth, yahoo has also listed this rumor:

Link

That's the same exact "article" that appears on ITI. Tim has already mentioned that yahoo carries the ITI stuff automatically via RSS feed.

Well, I see that now. I hadn't gotten that far in my reading...

I find it very ridiculous that a website that charges $80 for a membership would post such garbage as a front page article. Who gets off on that, anyways? Just making stuff up....

Yes, it's an exact verbatim copy, even down to the misspelling of Furcal's first name.

It might be bogus, but it is fun to read about. The lineup would be great. However, instead of Pie starting, I'd use CPat until Pie proves ready. I think it's too early to totally give up on Patterson or worse yet, just give him away. Batting 8th would take a lot of pressure off him and we need a lefthanded bat in the lineup.

Like I said, I'm sure it's bogus but it was a fun read.
