Ya know, If you think about it....why isn't this deal for Furcal complete if this is the deal on the table?? If I'm Furcal, I sign that as soon as it is offered, you don't let JH take a moment to rethink it.

Obviously....not real or he would have signed immediately. Braves wouldn't offer that. They're not that stupid.

This rumor is real, people. Scout.com is a respectable site and has been around for a while. Obviously no one KNOWS if it will go down, but it's at least real.

Wow! A real rumor?! Wow... just wow.

I've never heard of such of thing!

;)

What else am I supossed to call it?

No way. No way Hendry would decide that Furcal is worth more than Aramis and Lee combined, unless the budget is $200m.

Maybe it was a typo, and it was supposed to say $10m per year, and not $100m. And if this comes true (which I completely doubt), Hendry will get torn to pieces around here, even by the more optimistic posters. That would be just a colossal waste of $16.6m/yr.

No way that's true USS....no way. Imagine how much Lee would want then?

I think what he means is that nothing about a rumor is 'real'. Until a rumor is confirmed or denied, it's just a leak or someone's imagination.

Exactly. This would result in Aramis opting oout of his deal and wanting like a Manny Ramirez contract, Lee wanting Pujols money, and Boras making Z bleed the Cubs dry for a giant contract of his own.

This site either screwed up typing, or just plain made something up. I find it hard to believe. I mean, I know Hendry has overpaid everyone he's signed so far, but not by $50m.

Correct. Anyone could start a rumor, regardless of the level of absurdity... it's still a "real rumor".

LOL, and after skimming through the thread, I see that some people are worried that it might be true. To those people - I wrote the word gullible on your ceiling, have a look.
You misspelled "gullible" when you wrote it on my ceiling.

I'd be sickly fascinated with this team if this rumor comes true. It's like watching a train wreck. You just can't turn away.

I really don't believe this rumor. It's totally ridiculous.

Why would we want Soriano when Hendry's been clamoring about defense being a priority?

Why would we invest $200m in a middle IF that wouldn't even be in the top 3 in baseball?

Not really. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they spend alot more time following college sports and prospects. I didn't know that professional sports was part of their forte. When wsa the last time scout.com was credited with breaking any big MLB rumors? I can't think of any. An older, respected site or not, they have no credibility when it comes to MLB FA rumors. It was also pointed out earlier that a new guy has taken the site over. It's highly possible, and in this case, I think likely, that the new guys is inexperienced, and has not developed the ability to differentiate between BS rumors and the real deals. Who knows if the guy that bought the site has near the contacts in the industry of the old guy?

Add on top of that the fact these factors:

1. Hendry is focusing on defense this offseason

2. He's never shelled out more than 3 year contracts

3. the dollar amounts are ludicrous

We'll, lets just say that this new editor doesn't have any credibility established yet, and this article doesn't pass the common sense test. I'd be pissed if I had sank 80 busk into that site and now I see the new guy posting stuff like this.

I'll take your word for it - I've never heard of the site. First impressions are key though, and based off of the fact that the first thing I've heard from this site is that Furcal will get nearly 20 million a year, I'd say that I wont be putting much stock into anything that comes from it.

You know, I saw the title of this thread, and I was going into it thinking we'd see that Furcal was close to signing for 4/40 or whatever, and I was going to be okay with that. I'd accepted the fact that overpaying Furcal was going to be an unfortunate necessity. Then I opened the thread to see the most nightmarish rumor I've ever seen. However, there is hope. ITI is a well done site, but they don't have a lot in the way of rumor credibility, as hawkeyecub pointed out earlier.

I hate to denigrate another Cubs website, but this kind of bogus rumor is not outside the history of ITI. This is the same website that a couple years ago broke the "Pudge a Cub" story and talked about the "outlaw curveball" of Bobby Brownlie's that was supposed to be thrown at 95 MPH.

getting away from the veracity of this story, I'd rather have Cedeno at 2nd and move TWalk to RF (ouch, I know), than trade those two and a couple of other minor leaguers for Soriano and Mench.

I thought it was them who said that about Brownlie. But I didn't want to put it out there and falsely accuse them.

Considering how this market is blowing up Furcal is getting at least 5/60.

Can Bobby even throw a fastball at 95 anymore?

That's not too much worse in my mind, but I'd say that's the high end of what Furcal is going to get.

I suppose I am crediting ITI to highly.

I just remember back to the beginning of the 2005 season when I was looking for pics of burnitz and hairston in cubs uniforms for my website. ITI was the only place where I found them.

It's probably BS.

Nope.

This just smacks of the whole pudge incident, too. They reported that he had signed based on an "Arizona radio station report" and pretty much guaranteed it was a done deal. That was when Steve Holley still ran the show there, but it looks like things haven't changed at all.

As for the Yahoo thing, ITI has an RSS feed that Yahoo picks up automatically. I've been meaning to set one of those up for NSBB, but we haven't been writing too many front page articles lately anyway!
