how do these moves work?

do the cubs get to choose the player? or the rangers?

It all depends on the language of the trade. Usually a pool of players is determined at the time of the trade and the club who receives the the PTBNL chooses at a later time. Sometimes it's done differently.

I think a lot of times, the team giving up the PTBNL gets to make a pool of available players (10-15?) who the other team also agree on at the time of the trade. Then after a certain time, they have to choose one.

I'm far from an expert thaough, but I can recall some instances like that.

Jon, as in Voight.

"I'm driving John Leicester's LeBaron!"

The one with the pencil in it with his teeth marks? Did you get Tim Watley to look at it for you?

here's Rotoworld's take:

Nov. 16, 2005 - 4:23 pm et

Rangers acquired RHP Jon Leicester from the Cubs for a player to be named.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels' first pickup looks like a very good one. Leicester was quite the disappointment last season, but the Cubs are giving up on him way too quickly. He has the fastball-slider combination to be a quality setup man. Expect him to win a spot in the Texas bullpen next spring.

Rotoworld's being awful nice to Leicester. He had a 1.49 WHIP in almost 600 minor league innings, and his Major League totals are almost mirrors of his minor league numbers. He'll be 26 next year and is behind Wuertz, Williamson, and Novoa for the RH middle relief/setup spot(s). That said, this isn't a bad gamble for the Rangers, since Leicester does have decent stuff.

You're too kind to Ice Man, too. Not only had he fallen behind the major league guys like Wuertz, Williamson and Novoa, he was behind Van Buren, Wellemeyer and Brownlie at this point, too. Shoot, things were so bad for Leicester they used him as a starter at Iowa last year, where....he sucked as well.

Good luck to him though, seemed like a nice guy.

Isn't the date for the Rule V coming up soon? Doesn't the roster have to be set soon? Wonder if we'll be seeing more of these trades in the near future.

IIRC, the Rule V draft is Dec. 8th

Interesting. Too bad he couldn't figure it out. The talent was there to be a good relief pitcher. Here's hoping we get something good in return.

He was seriously our best reliever for a long time in 2004. I don't know what happened to him, but I hope he figures it out in Texas.

Wonder who the player will be.

Dusty trotting him out there every day for a couple of months probably didn't help.

Sometimes, if there is a trade like this in the weeks leading up to the Rule 5 draft, the player being received is designated as a PTBNL so, if the guy happens to be selected in the Rule 5 draft, the receiving team is free to choose someone else.

An example of this was the Cubs acquiring Paul Bako for, initially, Ryan Gripp. It was quickly changed to a PTBNL. After Gripp survived the Rule 5 draft, he was named as the PTBNL.

It could also be that one/all of the pool of players is Rule 5 eligible and the Cubs are waiting until after the draft to pick.

See what happens when your wife calls in mid-post? I got delayed a bit and ended up being redundant.

does this officially end the 'leicester for closer' bandwagon?

I think that ended a long time ago.

Yes, and it also breaks up the Dempster/Leicester twins.

Can somebody that knows how to post photos give us a side-by-side?

It certainly was part of the longer running "anybody but LaTroy for closer" bandwagon.

Well, this officially means that Leicester will be one of the best relievers in baseball next year.
