Is this a small trade with the Rangers to see how we are as trading partners? Should we expect another trade with the Rangers soon? God I hope not.

Interesting. Too bad he couldn't figure it out. The talent was there to be a good relief pitcher. Here's hoping we get something good in return.

He was seriously our best reliever for a long time in 2004. I don't know what happened to him, but I hope he figures it out in Texas.

Wonder who the player will be.

One player for five capital letters! Sounds like a good deal to me.

Leicester wasn't going to be utilized by the Cubs this season anyway. Clearing room off of the 40-man is a good idea right now. To get something, anything, in return for a guy who was going to walk is always a good thing.

I would view it simply as clearing space on the roster. I don't think GMs need test trades to see how they interact with one another.

That would make it, what, 3 times that he's been the PTBNL in a Cubs/Rangers trade?

It will likely be someone who won't be put on the 40-man roster. A b-level prospect from A-ball or something. I doubt it would be anyone with major league experience like Benes. I don't think Hendry is attempting to improve his bullpen with this move. I think he is clearing roster space. Could be wrong though, thats for sure.

here's Rotoworld's take:

Nov. 16, 2005 - 4:23 pm et

Rangers acquired RHP Jon Leicester from the Cubs for a player to be named.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels' first pickup looks like a very good one. Leicester was quite the disappointment last season, but the Cubs are giving up on him way too quickly. He has the fastball-slider combination to be a quality setup man. Expect him to win a spot in the Texas bullpen next spring.

Cubs giving up way too quickly? It was either get rid of him or watch him leave. We're not giving up on anything. Does Rotoworld even know that Leicester was a Rule 5 guy?

Rotoworld's being awful nice to Leicester. He had a 1.49 WHIP in almost 600 minor league innings, and his Major League totals are almost mirrors of his minor league numbers. He'll be 26 next year and is behind Wuertz, Williamson, and Novoa for the RH middle relief/setup spot(s). That said, this isn't a bad gamble for the Rangers, since Leicester does have decent stuff.

Leicester wasn't a rule V guy. He was already on the 40-man. He's likely being moved because he doesn't figure into the Cubs plans and they need the spot to protect another prospect.

Leicester was out of options and would have had to make the club out of spring training. That decision could have waited.

I don't agree with that at all. Maybe Jon will improve somewhere else. But the guy walked over 4.2 per 9 in the minors, and was over 4.5 in the majors. His WHIP was around 1.50 in the minors as well as the majors, with a K rate just over 7. He was nothing special and summed up the Cubs problems with their pitching staff, lack of control. There were too many guys giving up walks, and this is a case of getting rid of one. There's nothing wrong with "giving up on him" given the Cubs roster issues.

Lame joke on my part, I was just referring to the shuttling of Alan Benes back and forth between in the Cubs and Rangers in '03. Its clearly a move to clear 40 man spot.
