I've said it before, but I fully expect Aramis to win an MVP award before his current contract expires. I think he's going to have a giant year. When he went down, he led the team in RBI's and HR's, and this was after a brutal April and May.

The problem is that his current contract can be voided after this season if he chooses to :(

I never liked that clause, but it's hard to believe that Hendry wouldn't re-up him.

And if he puts ups the "monster MVP numbers" as expected, then he is going to be worth the new contract. This is a win-win situation for the Cubs, and ARam.

Here's to a .340/.420/ 47 hr/135 rbi's type monster season.

I'm not sure if Ramirez can hit .340 with 47 HR, but he's fully capable of knocking on the door of .330 and 40 HR. Assuming a big pickup for the cleanup spot (pretty big assumption, but Hendry got Lee for Choi, right?) the Cubs could have the toughest 3-4-5 in baseball next year. It's the rest of the lineup i'm worried about...

I'm pretty sure it's Aramis that has the option to get out of the contract so if he puts up that line he will undoubtedly opt for free agency and get 15+ from someone.

According to Licey.com, Aramis wants to play for the Tigers later this year if he's healthy enough. The google translation wasn't great, but it also looks like he wants to play for the DR in the world classic.

Ugh. Please don't, Aramis.

Why does he want to play for the Tigers?

A lot of players native to the Dominican Republic like to go back there (well, most are there during the off-season, anyways) and play some ball in the late fall or winter. I believe Pedro "How Much Longer Will My Should Hold Up?" Martinez was planning on playing for the Licey Tigers later this winter, as well.

A dominican national team named "the tigers"?

They're just a single team in the Dominican League, not the national team.

By the way, twice last week, they had lineups with Henry Rodriguez batting 5th and Sandy Martinez batting 6. They need Aramis.

I dont think he can walk enough to have an isop of 70

Given the right lineup, and the right personnel behind him, I think he can. That why I think it would be a CAREER yr. But come on, deep down, you love to see ARam put up those numbers, because you know if ARam is putting up those numbers....the Cubs are kicking butt.

He had 92 this year in just 123 games, hitting only .302. And he had Patterson, Perez and Macias hitting in front of him most of the season (besides Lee of course).

Macias ? Come on, Brian, you're overstating the case here. Through 127 games, Macias had exactly 16 ABs hitting ahead of Ramirez in the lineup.

Far be it from me to question you Fred, but....

Macias had 48 AB's hitting 1st or second in the lineup. Are you saying that 67% of them happened in the last third of the season?

In fact, yes. If you recall, Macias started and led off in 6 of our last 14 games due to injuries.

.318 BA

.388 OBP

37 HR

112 RBI

that by most peoples standards is a monster year. infact, those numbers would be a career year for the majority of players in the league.

is he capable of more? yes. is it realistic? not sure. the following stat line could occur if the stars aligned:

.341 BA

.440 OBP

44 HR

130 RBI

i just dont think its realistic but if stayed healthy and both derrek lee and todd walker got on-base all the time iti is possible. it would take a multitude of factors for it to happen though. i think 130 RBI would be pretty hard for him to accomplish. thats why i respect ortiz and manny so much because they put up 140 RBIs. thats just sickening.

I spent months and months trying to make that exact same case in 2002...dark days...

i see the RBI and HR totals as more attainable than the BA and OBP. i would just like to see a full healthy year. if he has that, great numbers will follow.

First off, how did you know my name was Brian? Not only are you an incredible stats man, but do you have ESP as well?

Okay, adding Macias in there is a bit of a stretch, but I also left out Enrique Wilson, Ryan Theriot and Jody Gerut. Those are small sample sizes as well, but they do start adding up. My point was that we got a team OBP of .299 from the lead off spot and a .314 from the #2 spot all season long. For Aramis to have as many RBI's as he did in just 123 games with such poor performance from the 2 lead off spots makes me believe he could produce even better with decent to excellent OBP from those spots.
