This is a very poor UK team, the least talented I've seen in the last 13 years. The 3 year stretch where UK lost 10 or more games underachieved but those teams had more talent . This team lacks talent, which is a shame b/c of some being dumb enough to listen to agents and those without proper interest.

That was a horrible performance. What was up with Rondo? He had 18 points, but it seemed like in the most crucial parts of the game, he was over in the corner twiddling his thumbs. UK has to have an inside presence, or this will be a very long season. I can easily see them losing to Indiana, maybe Kansas, and then there's Florida, LSU, and Alabama once the SEC season starts.

I doubt they'll lose to Kansas.

Kansas would have to play well, but I wouldn't be totally shocked. I also forgot to add Louisville.

What's your take on Patrick Sparks? I know that's a vague question, but try and answer it anyway.

He's very streaky. He went 3-12 today... he has to be hot for UK to win, it seems. Last year, when he made like 3 threes, they won an absurd percentage of their games. I thought he got beat defensively several times today (it seemed to happen to everyone, actually). UK can give you a much better evaluation though. :D

Michigan beats ND 71-67. This team just isn't very good. Chris Quinn making a terrible decision by throwing up a floater rather than go to Torin, who has been dominant and had 22/11 today. We'll probably be 2-3 after Bama kills us on Wednesday. It's very much a rebuilding year for the Irish with all the freshmen playing big minutes.

I wish our rebuilding years could be like UNC's, winning at Rupp.

That sucked. IMO Brey is not the right coach for this team.

ND is playing my school in two weeks so I will be at that game, and I hope they play well.

I think Brey is a fine coach, but he doesn't have any talent on this team. Every player has an obvious flaw. Francis is maddeningly inconsistent, Quinn and Falls can't create their own shot, Kurz isn't big enough to be effective inside, etc. etc. I like Chris Quinn a lot but he and Francis can't win games by themselves. This Irish team has no depth. However Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery had nothing but good things to say about the freshmen, Ryan Ayers, Kyle McAlarney and Luke Zeller. There's reason to hope the team will be good in the next couple of years, just not this year.

There is no excuse for last years team. Lattimire (sp?) and Francis inside and all they do is shoot 3s with Quinn, Falls, and Thomas. Brey knew Lattimire was only going to be there for a year, and he did nothing to take advantage of that! Last year was, IMO, the best team they have had in awhile, better than the Sweet 16 team of three years ago. I think Quinn is going to go the Thomas route and start throwing up absolutely obscene shots instead looking for teammates. How he holds the ND record for assists is beyond me. Zeller will be a stud.

Ok there Sulley I am sure you are the most infinite knowledge of Illinois hoops there is, but if you are so in love with Bill Self and his recruiting don't be afraid to folow his new team.

what a joke of a response.

From everything I have seen of Brian Carlwell he seems to be a heck of a get.

the fact remains that he has dropped significantly on everyone's lists and has a LOOOONG way to go. in short, carlwell is a project.

Too me Marcus Liberty was a flop, when you get a number 1 player in America, especially in that time period, you expect him to be a two or three year starter.

what are you talking about? i repeat, he played on the best illini team in history as a freshman. i can see the conversation now:

lou: "sorry nick, i know you're averaging 20 points and are the heart of this team, but we're going to sit you so that marcus won't be a flop in the eyes of illiniguy".

nick: "okay coach, anything for illiniguy's perception of marcus. i understand that his criteria for being a flop precludes you from starting me."

If he can play that first year then be a sophomore with game experience coming into 88-89 it might have made the difference in beating Michigan for the third time.

this is one of the most ridiculous phrases that i've ever seen on this board.

the illini lost the game because nobody blocked out sean higgins, period.

I also am sour on him because about three years ago he had an interview where he said that if he would have went to a pregram like Syracuse he would have been a much better pro.

whatever, he gave his time to the illini, he got out at the beginning of the sanctions. i can't fault him. maybe if he had gone to syracuse he could have sat behind derrick coleman while the flyin' illini came back to beat them in the regional final, i really don't care. he had a great sophomore season and he rode that to a lot of money.

GMAFB, Marcus if you could have spelled cat and been able to play right away at Illinois and actually stayed long enough to be the man in college I would think you could make that argument.

are you kidding me? HRF couldn't spell cat either, half the kids who you think of as illinois heroes were boxes of rocks, that doesn't separate them from marcus at all. luther head choked his girlfriend because she wouldn't watch roots with him, yet i think of his him as possibly a top 3 all-time player in illinois history. we won't even mention the incident with the open dorm room.

Sorry if I stepped on your toes oh master of everything Illinois.

heh, "master of everything illinois"? no, i just know more than you, which isn't hard.

On whose list has Carlwell fallen exactly? He ranks around where the great Jon Scheyer is on rivals.com???? I don't think he has gone anywhere on anyone's "list" not that lists matter much

EDIT: Carlwell is actually significantly higher than Scheyer on rivals.com rankings

Offensively, he moves very well w/out the ball and is able to get free off a screen, the best pure shooter on a team that lacks the outside shot. As Dobson mentioned, he is streaky and unlike most pure shooters when he is cold he will either be on the bench or look to pass even on open shots.

Defensively, knows how to play Tubby's style of defense can do well on full court or half court press when needed and can double team very well. Individually he is a poor defender, he is too slow to cover the 1 and get burned off the dribble and he is too small and weak to cover most 2s who can post up as it'll drag the 4/5 over to double him in man to man coverage.

Ball State's season obviously ended with the injury to Peyton Stovall. The 64-53 loss to Butler today wasn't ever as close as the score indicated, as the closest we got to them after the early going was 10 points. Without Peyton we have no one who can shoot a long range jumper, making this team completely one-dimensional. Our remaining guards are way too tentative with the ball.

Nothing like needing overtime to beat Delaware State at home. If there are any Big Ten teams that are bad enough to lose to Northwestern this year, they should be ashamed.

ah but Scheyer chose Duke so he has to be better. In all seriousness Scheyer is a lot further along at this point in time the Brian is, but I am confident in Bruce's player development skills. As for the poster talking about Xavier, yeah it was too close but I think that is a tournament team they played. Matta recruited some good players who could all shoot and defend.

That is not a championship team. I don't think the talent is that great, and the depth sucks. Not even close to a team like UNC who won last year.

But I don't think any team this year has the talent that UNC had last year. UConn may get there once they get players back.

This year may be as wide open a year when it comes to teams that could win it all because of no dominant teams.

Uconn, Texas, and Villanova are the best three teams. Uconn will get a lot better once they add Williams. If IU had a really good guard to go with Marco and DJ they would be the best team in the country.

Vaden's really good, and he's technically a guard. :D If they can get Vaden to play every game like he did last game, and Strickland to play like he did the first 2 games, and Wilmont to play like he did his 1st game, and Ratliff to play like he did in the middle of last year, and Monroe can take care of the ball like he did the first 2 games, they will be pretty good.

But yeah, those 3 are the best, and I don't think Nova is big enough to make it. I'm picking UConn to take it all.

I can't remember the last time that Duke really was as good as its hype. I mean even the last year they won it all hte referees completely hosed Arizona. Vaden is a good player, I guess I should have clarified. If IU had a good to great PG they would be a load. As it is I think you guys will probably win the Big Ten as long as Mike Davis doesn't work any of his magic on you guys.

Michigan St. is a better team.

MSU is the most talented, but they will get ABUSED on the inside by White and Killingsworth. White should be back by the January 11 game, shouldn't he?

I'm reserving judgment until Trannon gets back in the swing of things.

Is Drew Naymick still starting on the interior?

I like Trannon, but I don't know if he's good enough to keep up with White and Killingsworth. Naymick is a less talented Nick Smith, and that is really saying something.
