Murph was talking about me, and not Bruce Levine. I did write about Abreu today. It's possible Gillick will move him. If that's the case, I expect the Cubs to get in on the action. They like Pierre more than Crawford at this point. They really like Pierre, but I think they (over)value his speed more than anything.

I'll hear from Jim Hendry a little later this afternoon. Me e-mail in box has been jammed, as you might expect.

Once again thanks, Bruce. Put a bug in Jim's ear that he should look to sign Dotel to a Dempster/Williamson like deal.

And try not to laugh if he says that he likes guys who catch the ball again.

Overall we may not be too happy so far, but if Hendry makes Pierre-Furcal as 1 and 2 in the order and nabs Abreu, I would have to deem this offseason as successful. However, there is no guarantee on these moves happening.

Thanks, Bruce. We all really appreciate any info you can funnel our way.

And BTW, if you convince Hendry to change his mind about Giles, I'll buy you a year's worth of Omaha Steaks. :D

Fixed :(

Bruce any chance you can get Hendry to do a Q and A with us?

Yeah. I could just see some of the questions now:

How the hell did you give Neifi a 2-year contract worth $5 mill dollars? ARe you on crack or something?

With all this new discussion, it seems that Burnett has been forgotten. I don't think anyone on here would rather spend the extra $2.5-3m (depening on how the signing bonus is paid) to get him at $9m. I would think his value for a few more bucks would be ten times that of Rusch and Neifi.

Ugh! I hate when I keep getting "critical error: could not connect to the database" pages.

I would just ask him to justify thinking that Brian Giles will be overpriced, when he's overpaid 2 players that are completely redundant by a factor of 5.

I'd also ask him if he's on crack. :P

Abreu makes more sense for Hendry/Baker and the Trib than Giles. Of course, they'll have to shell out players for Abreu.

Abreu's 3 years younger. Abreu has more speed. Dusty loves speed. Abreu only has 2 years left on his contract. That's HUGE. The Trib likes short contracts and am sure they're a little concerned that Giles could break down in years 3 and 4 of his contract.

There's just no way it happens. I just cannot see it happening.

I'll be real surprised if it happens. Just doesn't seem like a good match. Philly wants a 3b and the Cubs have no one besides ARam to offer. However, I think Abreu's more likely than Giles.

Yeah but Hendry might not think ARam can catch the ball.

Please don't say that. It's just not funny, because I can't dismiss it as out of the question.

Giles won't be signing a 2 yr. contract like Neifi and Rusch. This franchise is terrified of long contracts.

Making decisions like that, though, is one of the reasons we never win.

Bruce - When you get a chance, I'd like to know how Neifi's money will be spread out over the two years, if you have that information.

Well he has a problem w/ fielding, but can't see a Abreu for ARam deal.

Quite true. Hopefully, this franchise will start making longer term investments. I had enough w/ the stop gaps.
