Rotoworld:

Vinny Castilla - 3B - Padres

Padres acquired third baseman Vinny Castilla from the Nationals for RHP Brian Lawrence and cash.

And this is why the Red Sox shouldn't be unhappy at all about missing out on Kevin Towers. Lawrence could have rebounded and reemerged as a solid starter next year. Castilla, on the other hand, is likely to be a detriment as the Padres tries to defend their NL West title. The 38-year-old remains a fine defensive third baseman, but he hit just .253/.319/.403 in 494 AB last season and Petco Park will hurt him just as much as RFK Stadium did. Why the Padres felt the need to make this trade on Nov. 3 when there could have been many more possibilities later is beyond us. Nov. 3 - 8:44 pm et

Why?

Castilla is gonna be quite crappy in Petco.

If I were a Padres' fan I would be thrilled.

hahahahahaha

jim bowden made a good move? this is hilarious. boston has to be happy they didn't try to get towers, now.

i wonder if this means we'll see harris next year.

Brian Lawrence is a pretty damn good young pitcher, and they ship him out for an old guy who's not that good at a position where they already have a solution (Burroughs)? This is a terrible move. Kevin Towers clearly has some sort of grudge against the organization or something to make this move.

So do the Nats use our beloved Brendan Harris?

I'd expect so. He couldn't possibly do any worse than Vinny would.

Maybe he just assumed that any deal with Bowden was going to be a good one.

Well, we learn something new every day.

Washington plans on using a guy they drafted with the 4th overall pick last year. What a great move for them. I have always liked Vinny Castilla but he is going to be 38 and didnt have a good year last year.

Ryan Zimmerman will play 3B for the Nats. He's gonna be a great player.

i'm as happy about this trade as padres fans are mad. :D

Man, I would have liked Brian Lawrence. He's inconsistent, but has the chance to get it turned around and be pretty good. He's made 33 starts 3 straight years (31 in 02), but doesn't have the ungodly number of innings. He also doesn't rack up pitch counts and has kept the ball on the ground pretty well for most of his career.

I wonder if the Padres are making room in the rotation for a David Wells trade. Wells requested a trade back to a west coast team. Maybe the Padres are planning to get him back from the Red Sox.

Still a crappy trade though.

I thought they were moving him to shortstop?

Nats can't unload Cristian Guzman. No one will take on his salary. So, it left third base which is where Zimmerman would have ended up anyway as the years progress.

In any event, I spend a lot of time in San Diego and a lot of Padre fans have mixed feelings. They feel they could have gotten something better than Castilla, but aren't disppointed to have gotten rid of Lawrence.

And what do the Pads do with Burroughs?

Burroughs was horrible last year (250/318/299) - our favorite whipping boy Neifi had him by 85 ops points.

I saw this trade on another board referred to as "Typical Kevin Towers dumpster diving."

Needless to say, now we know what to say when Jim Hendry's "lemons" turn out to be rotten. :D
