Johnny Damon to the Cubs rumor on Jerry Crasnick's ESPN chat:

Mark (Boston, MA): Jerry, where do you see Johny Damon ending up?

Jerry Crasnick: Mark,

Boston, the Yankees and the Cubs are the teams you hear most often at this point. I'm sure Scott Boras, his agent, will drum up a few other clubs. It'll be interesting to see whether someone will give him a four-year deal, but I think that's a pretty good possibility.

God! I hope not. I don't see the need to give Damon a long term deal when we have Felix Pie on the rise.

Towers would be a fool not to make the jump to AZ. I'd jump ship before the Padres ship completely sinks.

but san diego is where his family lives, plus, i've heard the weather is very nice.

Sounds like he'll be back in San Diego after all.

The Pads are headed down a pretty dark road. But what is interesting is that the local sports people (print & radio) are both split evenly as to how to go. SOme say break the bank and go for it another year but others say its time to "blow it up". Most of the them all agree that Hernandez is gone and almost all of them (regardless of what Philly billy says) think that Giles, Loretta, Burroughs, Klesko (if possible), Williams, Lawrence are all available.

Any of those players interest anyone? I am sure that SD would be interested in Patterson (would fit well in Petco) and I am positive that if the offer is Patterson/Hill we could get our choice of Klesko/Burroughs or Klesko/Lawrence. I would think hard about Klesko/Lawrence.

Eaton is another one that could be available. I wouldn't be interested in either of those deals. Especially the Klesko/Lawrence one. Klesko doesn't seem interested in waiving his no trade anyway.

I don't see where that team will draw any interest from free agents and I don't see how they make themselves better through trades.

Burroughs would be a great bench target IMO. He'll make a little more, but we have the money, and a change of scenery and role might help him out a lot. He can back up 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 1st too. His career has a startling resemblence to Patterson's.

Normally I agree but at this point with this manager I would rather take a known commodity like Damon than a guess in Pie. Pie is still a prospect, sign Damon, trade Pie....

i dont think there is a chance of this happening.

I've seen Tracys name come up on a lot of messege boards what would Arizona want for him??.

It all depends in which direction they want to go. They have Connor Jackson, Carlos Quentin, Shawn Green, Luis Gonzalez and Tony Clark for 1b and the corner outfield positions. With Glaus on the books for third base, that pushes Tracy into that mix as well.

They need to move someone, but it's anyone's guess what they will do. I don't think Arizona's situation gets any clearer until a GM is hired. At that point, he will have a lot of decisions to make on who stays and who goes. They could use a CF and if we're going to unload Patterson, I might guage their interest in him and see what would have to be added to him to bring a return of either Tracy or Quentin.

Any chance of them putting Tracy back at 3B when they inevitably trade Glaus this offseason? He's bad defensively there, though.

Sure, don't listen to me. I've been saying all along that SD was blowing him off and they've given him zero reason to want to stay.

Unfortunately, I think this is the order in which I think he'll sign.

1. Atlanta

2. Wherever Atlanta trades Marcus Giles

3. St. Louis

4. Cubs

It sounds like Ramon Hernandez won't be back in San Diego either. I'm calling it right now, San Diego goes from first to worst this year.

Hey BBB, you hit on something not many are talking about. Marcus Giles is an above average 2B and 2 hitter. Good OBP with some pop and just getting to his prime. I've heard there is tension between Giles and the Braves front office, - Todd Walker to ATL?

If we were able to land Marcus cheaply, would Brian Giles offer us a good deal? It makes sense to me, what are your thoughts on this?

Would 3 years 27 million get it done? With a team option for a 4th year for 9 million, with a buyout.

Year 1 11 million

Year 2 9 million

Year 3 7 million

4 years 36 million?

Giles is 34, but I thought he was a tad older. He walks a lot so his OBP will almost certainly be respectable throughout the duration of the contract, power will probably decline year by year.

I'd honestly give him anything within reason.. say, up to 12 million per. We have tons of money to spend this offseason and unfortunately we do not have the upper hand in these negotiations (if, in fact, there are any). We are DESPERATE for a productive OF bat and right now he's the only one on the market.

It'd be a shame to waste Prior and Z's "cheap" years...That's for sure.

Backload that deal, trade him after the first season when Pie is ready.

I did touch on it somewhere in this forum, but I didn't say much. I haven't a clue what Atlanta would be looking for in return for Giles. If they are losing Furcal via free agency, I'm not sure they would consider losing the whole middle infield. But, they do need to make room for Marte and Betemit. I'm not sure if Walker and Williams gets it done for Atlanta. More than that could be overpaying.

Al Reyes then?

EDIT: Ooooh, and Bob Wickman is available too.

both would be high quality signings, to be sure ;]

especially al reyes, maybe he can bring us some of that ridiculous cardinal luck while he recovers from tj.

or wickman can close because he's a proven closer with lots o' saves and thus he rulz.

that would be just like hendry.

he had his chance to sell high, and trade Lee for Mesa during the season, and he didnt do it. Now he has to pay top dollar, great, just great.

No, I don't think that does it. I'd offer 4/50.

Here's the deal:

2006: 12 mil

2007: 12 mil

2008: 12 mil

2009: 12 mil

2010: 12 mil or 2 mil buyout.

I honestly believe that deal puts him in to RF for the Cubs next season and we have the money to get it done.
