As long as we are ranting, the media overkill is mindblowing. The Tribune is running 8-page sections (separate from the sports section) daily. Today's Tribune had an article "grading" the facial hair of some of the Sox. The newscasts spend the first 10-15 minutes on the Sox. Now before anyone accuses me of sour grapes, let me say that I wouldn't read 95% of the articles even if they were about the Cubs in the WS. I'm a Bear fan, but the overkill about the 1985 Bears was (and still is) incredible. The 2-week period before any Super Bowl is the worst time in the world to read a sports section. I'm just tired of reading about the left-fielder's second cousin.

We had that sort of overkill in 2002 in LA. I think that comes with being in the city with the World Series - the amount of press would be the same if the Cubs were there too (if not more).

Oh, and that was one hell of an impressive post, Outshined.

The funny thing is, I never even gave a second thought to the White Sox until I went to high school about a mile south from downtown. Since it was a Catholic high school and had a good reputation, it attracted people from all over the city and surrounding suburbs. Freshman year, 1998, the Cubs were in the Wild Card chase and eventually made the playoffs. These guys who were from Beverly, The East Side, and Bridgeport gave me so much grief over being a Cubs fan that I was almost shocked.

The Cubs and White Sox played in different leagues. They weren't even in the same division. Yet, here these guys were, ripping me for being a Cubs fan. It never made much sense to me and it still doesn't. I've come across plenty more people like that up here at UW-Madison, to boot. This bitterness and hostility is aimed more towards them than anyone else.

Oh, by the way, Jabroni sends his love to everyone.

Isn't there something to hate about EVERY team that isn't YOUR team? Isn't it just a matter of degrees? Why is this so much worse? Cuz that is your perspective TODAY. If it were the Yanks and the 'stros, you'd find something to complain about there as well.

I mean, come on! The STROS! They are AT LEAST 99% as bad as anything having to do with the Sox, and they are from TEXAS!!!!!

The Sox play good baseball. They won 99 games this year, many in very exciting fashion. They have pitchers that attack the batter, unlike a certain northside team. They play solid D, unlike that same said team. They are here because they WON.

How the fans act, how I feel about the owner, what any of you say about the team is irrelevent to the guys out there playing the game. I am a chicagoan, so I root for a Chicago team against ANYONE else.

Again, its about sports. It's about who wins. Looks like it will be the sox and NOT the 'Stros, and for that I am happy.

I completely disagree. I would honestly care less if it were the Yanks vs. the 'Stros. Being that I live here in the city (Wrigleyville in fact), it sickens me to see the hypocritical excitement going on all around me (which was the original topic of this thread). I can't walk or drive anywhere in the city without being sick to my stomach after seeing White Sox excitement. If it were any other team, that wouldn't matter to me, but seeing as though I'm right here in the thick of it, it's no fun. It's not that I'm bitter, it's more so that I can't stand to see a team winning that I absolutely for one can't stand and can't stand their fans. As my friend put last night, "it's like I'm living in a whole new city that I'm unfamiliar with." I feel that exact way. So your argument doesn't really say much seeing as though I've never cared about the world series match up at all (not even 2003 bothered me this much).

Posted

I could see this argument if the Cubs were only spending 50m on the team. They spent 100m on the team last year, which was top 5 in baseball.

Be upset with the people who make the decisions on plays on the team, but don't be upset with the ownership that gives the decision makers plenty of cash to put what should be a top 5 team on the field.

What BBB said.

And, BTW, I do not believe, based on my readings on baseball history, that the 1919 Sox were the only team that ever threw a Series. They were, as they say, the only one who got caught.

And to hold that against the 05' Sox is silly.

Cub fans should be that last group of people mad at band-wagon fans. Nobody remembers 1984, 1998, and 2003? Whats happening for the Sox is no different then what happened for the Cubs and any other team that wins games. You think the Angels were this popular before they went to the World Series?

Frankly, I'm pretty annoyed at how obnoxious some Cubs fans are being in their hyperbolic hatred for the White Sox. I used to think it was the Sox fans who were obsessed with all things Cubs that needed to get some perspective. Unfortunately it looks to me that just as many Cubs fans are turning into that whining paranoid Soxaphobe.

Maybe it comes from living in NY for a decade with all their overly arrogant Yankees fans, but I don't see the big deal here. As a Cubs fan, my concern is the Cubs. I spend nearly every ounce of energy I spend on baseball thinking about what the Cubs can do to get better.

I'm sure he's pissed that I put him back on ignore so I don't have to read his rants. O_O, tell him it's nothing personal, but I have to read and respond to the writings of 13 year olds all day at work, so I need a break from them when I'm at home.

I've noticed a trend that the people who are 'annoyed' at the obnoxiousness of some of us Cubs fans who are openly bitter and disliking the White Sox right now are those who don't currently live in or around the city. I can't imagine myself being that upset if I still lived in East Lansing, MI because I wouldn't be around all the hooplah excitement surrounding the White Sox, but as I said before, living here in the city you see the obnoxious white sox fan behavior everyday, its everywhere you go, and to see how the city is on the knees to the White Sox right now is like having little needles jabbing you in the back each time you see or hear anything related to the south siders. Yea that may sound a bit extreme, but it's how I feel and I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling this way.

What the heck is wrong with a city going gaga over a team playing for the championship? How is there any justification in labeling that mania as hypocrisy?

I've lived in NY for ten years, so I know what it's like to watch obnoxious fans' arrogance grow ten fold in October. Regardless, I'm really disappointed in how willing Cubs fans have been to take the bait and let this affect them. Worry about the Cubs. If somebody gets off acting like an ass because his team is winning this year, it just reflects poorly on him.

Hell, I'm getting married soon and half my chicago family that's coming is Sox fans who will be very willing to remind me about the Cubs record. I don't care.

I think you people who are so upset about this need to take a step back and stop taking it so seriously. And quit acting like Sox fans who can't get over the other team in town and how they affect their lives.

Hey polosprt, here is how some of my fellow Cub fans and I are going to combat this:

This Friday is casual day, so we are going to be Cubbed-out to the max (with every piece of cubs gear I can wear simultanously), regardless of whether the Sox win or lose. Cub jacket, shirt, jersey and cap.

I think it's a fine time to do it. 8)

Our offices are in NBC tower, so we will garner visibility.

I'm sure that is how the Sox fans felt after 84, 89, 98, and 2003.

White Sox [fans are like] the obnoxious jerk at your high school who was dumb as a box of rocks, was not particularly well-liked by most people in high school, and who made a habit of picking fights and stuffing people into lockers. After he graduated, he went into a dead end job, became an alcoholic, and now spends his days engaging in schaudenfreude, reveling in the misery of others despite being a drunken, fat loser himself.

Only now he's won the lottery.

It's a shame that all can't fit on a sig line. EDIT: Happily, US Soccer has proven me wrong.

To me, the Sox are baseball's version of the Raiders. A good chunk of both fan bases don't know jack about history or the games - they're just a bunch of losers who like the "gansta" look, and the colors suit that purpose.

Unless I'm much mistaken, someone already has tried that as a sig.

Well, this is shaping up to be the least watched World Series ever, ratings-wise.

I can guarantee you that wouldn't be the case if the Cubs were in it.

We need management that is as smart as the Tribune's marketers in the 80s. Dang, they did a wonderful job.

Ewww Outshined, St. Ignatius??

Yep.

Ewww, you guys killed my high school team (Penn) in football this year. But you're sending two of your best players to Notre Dame so I guess we're even.

First, let me say that I wish the 'stros would come back and win four straight; however, I'm resigned to a Sox championship and I think I am accepting it much better than I thought I would. They're a really good team, I must say. When Sox fans see me with my Cubs hat and/or jacket, they smile and ask if I'm supporting the Sox, 'cause we're all Chicagoans. I tell 'em that I support the Sox just as much as they supported the Cubs in '03. That shuts 'em up.

What I find amusing is all the crisp new black-and-white hats -- not the championship hats, but the uniform hats -- around town -- bandwagon jumpers. What I don't like is driving down Addison towards my home seeing White Sox flags hanging from porches and flying from cars.

Some of you need to dose up on tranquilizers.

So what if the White Sox win the World Series? Maybe our Cubbies shouldn't have wasted all those years and all those dollars then, huh?

Be angry with your own team. They're the ones who have let us down. Hating on other's success will only make you a miserable person.

Yeah people on this site never get down on Cubs management. It's all excuse making and White Sox hating.

You're being sarcastic, right? We've been dissing Dusty Baker since the 2005 season began, and Jim Hendry and company haven't exactly escaped punishment either.
