The Cubs have alot of money to spend, but will they sign that many FA's? not sure JH won't go a different route through trades. Landing Furcal & Giles seems a little fair fetched. One, yes. Both, unlikely.

I don't see the Cubs landing both Furcal and Giles, especially in a weak FA market. I'd love it if it happened though.

And frankly, that's what scares me. I figure we could get one target, but not both, and I think that Jim has targeted Furcal.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like this.....

Lofton (til Pie)

Hairston (or Cedeno)

Lee

Giles

ARam

Nomar

Murton

Barrett

Pitcher

Wood

Prior

Zambrano

Maddux

Williams

Dempster

Williamson

Howry

Seanez

Wuertz

Ohman

Blanco

Perez

Sweeney

?

?

Therefore, we sign Lofton (1 yr), Giles (3 yrs, til Harvey), Nomar, Williamson, Howry, Seanez, Sweeney, and possibly one or two more role player(s).

What about Daisuke Matsuzaka?

Gesundheit!

Actually I have only heard about that guy, but people liken him to Smoltz. I have little faith in our ability to land imports, seeing as they mostly like to auction themselves off to the highest bidder, for a price that is often too high (Contreras, Kaz).

Anybody have more info on him?

UK is a fan, I believe. I wouldn't mind the Cubs going that route, but I doubt it.

Instead of Seanz, I'd prefer Sauerbeck or Eyre. That would be a great offseason, imo, even without the LOOGY.

Here's a link to a video of his unique pitch, the "gyroball"

A better video is here: http://thejuice.baseballtoaster.com/archives/181026.html

It seems Will Carroll has taught a high school kid, Joey Niezer how to use it effectively

I think Raisin is right, I doubt the Cubs would take a gamble money-wise.

Hey thanks D!

Any ideas on what this guy will command?

Also, does anyone have his adjusted stats?

That gyroball would screw with batters in a similar manner as Hideo's delivery did when they first seen it.

If you me gave the choice of Daisuke Matsuzaka or Furcal, I'd take Daisuke...

and bring back Nomar.

That's the thing, there is one team every yr (or every couple of yrs) that surprise people about who they sign. A couple of yrs back, Colorado signed BOTH Hampton and Neagle and was on the verge of signing Dreifort (granted THAT didn't work out, but it surprise alot of people). More recent the O's signing Miggy Tejada---best SS in the game bar none-unless Arod moves back to SS--Javy Lopez, and Raffy Palmeiro, so it can be done, signing a couple of the season's best FA. The only problem, is neither the Rockies, or the Orioles did their homework. Signing Miggy was a no-brainer. Palmeiro was broken down before the steroids, And Lopez was overrated to begin,. Rockies should never sign finesse pitchers to big market contracts.

So, do I think the Cubs could land Lofton/Giles/Furcal/Howry/Seanez/Sweeney, yes, but if I am the Cubs, I would do the homework about each player, before making the offer, tho. For example, would Furcal be tempted to start drinking again, or will arm problems resurface with Howry, or would Sweeney revert to pre-Colorado crappiness.

But in the cases you mention, there were a lot more big-name FA's than there are in this class. With the weak class, I just don't see us being able to sign more than one of the top tier.

Let's see...

Furcal

Lofton (eh)

Lee

Giles

Ramirez

Murton

Walker

Barrett

Rotation:

Z

Prior

Wood

Maddux

Williams

Bullpen:

Dempster

Howry

Seanez

Ohman

Rusch

Williamson/Novoa/Wuertz

Bench:

Sweeney

Perez

Blanco

etc. etc etc.

Wishful thinking can be fun.

That team would be a Kerry Wood 25 start season away from being neck and neck with the Cards for best team in the NL.

That team would be handle any regression from Lee and not skip a beat. I think it would be a top 5 team offensively, have a top 5 bullpen, and a top 5 rotation.

I'd still rather see another SP given the odds of an injury for Wood & the step taken back by Prior as well as the declining Maddux.

Me too. But I won't complain about that offseason by the Cubs.

A team can only sign three type A free agents unless they lose more than that to FA. I'm not sure how many of those guys are type A, but I think that may be an infeasible offseason.

Thats a good point, I'd have to think Seanez would be a type A, making it 4. Does resigning your own players in the exclusive period count to that total...i.e. resigning nomar and not picking up furcal?

Nope. I'm pretty sure re-signing your own players doesn't count against your total. But if Nomar were to re-sign before declaring, it definitely wouldn't count.

Ok, then everything rotoauthority said except Nomar instead of Furcal, I like it.
