...among their own fans? And if you take it a step further, how many managers are there who are popular among their fans, and also thought of as a good manger throughout baseball?

I really can't think of many. LaRussa and Torre would be as close as it gets. Possibly Gardenhire or Scoscia.

By the way could we not let this turn into a thread debating Baker? It's not meant to knock or defend him, just an observation on the current state of baseball. It just seems to me that in this day and age- where everything is so closely followed and scrutinized through the internet, sports talk radio and TV- that every manager frustrates his fans over the course of a 162 game season and within a few years they lose faith in him. And if he's lucky enough not to do that, a majority of the time other fans or experts around baseball view him as a fool.

I think very few are, some are valid reasons why to like or dislike a manager and some aren't.

But, it is more common to have a manager liked and disliked at the same time. The longer the tenure, the greater the divide.

Yeah, everything I hear around town (Los Angeles) is that the Angel fans are very happy with Scioscia.

If they're not, please ship him to Chicago ASAP. I'll personally pay for Dusty's plane ticket out and Scioscia's ticket in.

We'll split the price of the tickets 50/50!

33/33/34 (I'll even do the 34!)

I would agree that Bobby Cox is generally well-liked. I don't think the lack of rings hurts his reputation too bad.

I would disagree that LaRussa is overly well liked. I know many Cards fans who despise him. But I agree that Scioscia is among those that are borderline revered. He is the only current manager I would sell my soul to have manage the Cubs.

Not many managers are well liked and the reasons are numerous. I don't know how accurate the reasons are, but they sure are numerous.

Yes, there are many Cardinal fans who hate LaRussa and would be happy to see him fired tomorrow. Why is beyond me since all he does is win. I think he's gotten even better in the last two years because he has loosened up some and given the players more input. But for many Cards fans Whitey Herzog is the pinnacle of management and they have never accepted Tony.

Come on guys, this is a direct slap at Dusty. How can you NOT like a guy, who complains openly that fans are being overcritical? Or can you not like a guy, who runs his team like a Chuckie-Cheese? How can you not like a guy who has the player's respect, yet can't lead them anywhere. Dudes, the "Dustman" is popular with the players, and that matters, don't it?

Ok, enough sarcasm. I would love to get Sciossa of the Angels, and to a certain degree, Tom Kelly of the Twins, but seeing as neither are available, I would try and sign the trained money that works in fairs. Heck, let's see if Marcel the monkey (Friends, famous monkey) is available. I'm sure he would work for peanuts. Hehehe.

i dont like scioscia very much at all

It would be helpful to others on the board if you could explain your perspective. Do you have numbers, anecdotes, or something else to support your dislike of Scoscia?

I know you were half-kidding half-serious, but you pretty much summed it all up. It's just normal to hate your manager, I'm a man - and its obvious to me what it is. Y chromosone! Testosterone!

Men always think we can do better. e.g. Softball Dads.

Admit it guys. :(

I don't think anyone in their right mind would hand Rob Quinlann a job over Dallas McPherson. I don't think many managers would still have Darren Erstad playing over Casey Kotchman. I think being in a terrible division with a huge payroll makes him look a lot better than he is.

I like Scioscia, but having Erstad play 1B does puzzle me too. I can't ever think of someone earning a gold glove at a premium defensive position (MIF, CF) getting moved to a corner while still in their prime playing years. Erstad made a great CF, but is far below average offensively for a 1B. They would have been better off using his value as a CF and trading him if they didn't want him in CF anymore. That has to be one of the oddest moves I can remember in the last 10 years.

Back to the original post, even when he resigned/got fired, I think most KC fans like Tony Pena (although with that lineup, it's hard to expect much out of any manager).

Dallas is injured and out for the year, he was playing when healthy. I wouldn't start Erstad over Kotchman either, no matter how many intangibles Erstad has.

I don't like Scioscia's lineup constructions - he has a Dusty-esque ignorance of OBP, especially at the top of the lineup (OC or Erstad batting second!?). Some will criticize his bullpen management, especially in the ALDS the past two years, but I don't really think it's that bad. All in all, Scioscia is an above average manager, and a good fit for a more pitching and small ball oriented team.

But yeah, Scioscia is definitely very popular amongst Angels fans. I'd say Bochy is very popular amongst the majority of Padre fans too.
