My money would be on Jeff Francouer in the National League. Zach Duke should also get looked at it. Ryan Howard 3rd.

American League I'd vote for Jonny Gomes or Huston Street.

If we are looking at the ROY as the " Rookie MVP" and not simply the rookie who had the best statistical season, Id have to say Houston's Wllie Taveras. At the beginning of the year, it looked like the Stros would have a huge hole in center after Beltran departed. Not to mention that they would have no speed in the outfield (Berkman, Lane, Palmeiro was projected), or on the basepaths at the top of the order.

Taveras filled that hole better than could be expected. He had a pretty good average, got on base with a lot of infield hits, stole a lot of bases and basically acted as the sparkplug for an offense that could of been a lot worse than it was (and it was pretty bad).

My point is that if you take Taveras off the Astros, they don't make the playoffs. That's a huge endorsement for ROY in my mind.

That's a good point. And as UK said, he should win a gold glove this year. His defense was huge for the best pitching staff in baseball.

Francouer will win because of his hype, while Howard actually had better numbers (and filled in for an injured superstar in Thome).

I don't follow the AL enough to even know who is a candidate

Sadly not Jason Dubios.

It is hard to bat or play left field when you have to constantly look over your shoulder.

He will win the NL and the AL ROY.

My thinking it will be Jonny Gomes of the Devil Rays. .282, 21 hr, 54 rbi in 101 games. OBP of .375 as well. That's not bad playing for a crappy team.

Crappy team, but pretty good offense.

I'd kill for that offensive talent.

Heck, I'd love to get my hands on Delmon, BJ and Jonny alone!

I'd go with Huston Street in the AL and Ryan Howard in the NL.

Howard was awesome down the stretch, and along with Rollins and Utley, helped keep the Phillies in the race. Francoeur is a terrific talent, but IMO, Howard made more of an impact on his team than Francoeur with ATL.

Yeah that would be nice. But I love Baldelli too. I think he comes back real strong next year. I think he'll be a Nomar like hitter soon. I wonder if they would be open to trading him. They still have a ton of OF talent if they get rid of him and Huff.

ROY is the best player, not the most valuable.

Actually, the BBWAA guidlines simply say "most outstanding rookie" which, like the MVP award itself, is open to pretty broad interpretation. I'm not saying that Taveras will win it, I'm just saying that I think he deserves it. I will garuntee you that a few writers agree with me and he will get several votes. This is not to say that the other names mentioned in this thread are not deserving. This is simply my opinion of who should win what is, after all, a fairly subjective award.

The awards should be done like the Rolaids relief award. Have a points system for the best player/rookie. Heck, go by fantasy points. In my points league, Arod would be the AL MVP. Pujols and Lee actually tied in fantasy points in the NL. Carpenter and Santana Cy Young.
